EDITOR SMITH DROWNED.
Loses His L f- While Trying to Shoot
the Kupids.
Quebec, Sept. 10.— Carl Smith, who
wrote the "fired at random’’ column in
the Chicago Record, and Louis Sass,
•porting editor on tho same paper, have
been drowned iu tho heavy rapids of
tho Gramlo discharge by tho upsetting
of their birch bark conoes. They were
on a holiday tour. The Grande dis
charge is tho outlet of Lake St. John,
/or which resort tho newspapermen left
hero Wednesday morning.
The Vaehe Coille, where the drown
ing occurred, is opposite tho lower point
of Alma island, where the waters of tho
Grande and Little discharge unite to
form the head of Saguanay river. At
low water the rapids are often shot by
Indians in canoes. But tho water be
ing high the guides objected to the trip
tmtil urged by tho deceased. When
©no canoe upset the other weut to its as
sistance and was also swamped.
Both guides were drowned.
Mr. Smith was well known through
out the west, and at one time was man
aging editor of the Omaha World-
Herald.
THE COLORADO POPULISTS.
Demund Governor as tho Price of
Fusion.
Colorado Springs, S9pt. 10.—The
hough she was a girl of the most
remarkable loveliness, the marriage
gave great offense nut only to the im
perial family, whoupt served still fur
ther to estrange. but also to the Aus-
trum aristocracy. The objections to tho
empress were entirely on the score of
birth, and the emperor was regarded as
having been guilty of a mesalliance iu
wedding a princess not of a reigning
family, but merely one of the ducal
houses of Bavaria.
No secret was made of these senti
ments. and during the first ten years of
her married life Empress Elizabeth was
subject- d to a succession of the grossest
slights and downright insults by the
great Austrian noble*. That the em
press neither forgot nor forgave this
treatment was strikingly demonstrated
by her undisguised hatred of Vienna
and by her equally patent contempt for
its great families.
They had three child en, the Arch
duchess Ciisoki. who is married to Prince
I.uitpo.d of Bavaria; the Archduke Ru
dolph. who married Princes* Stephanie
of Belgium, and who was (seemingly)
assa-Mnated'in 1HM), and Archduchess
Maria Valeria, v ho married the Arch
duke Finn/. Salvator of Austna-Tus-
cauv. The late empress was an enthu
siastic horsewoman.
