PASSES TO A BRIGHT REWARD
THE EXCELLENCE OF SYRUP OF FIGS
is due not only to the originality and
simplicity of the combination, but also
to the care and skill with which it is
manufactured by scientific processes
known to the California Fio Syrup
Co. only, and we wish to impress upon
ail the importance of purchasing the
true and original remedy. As the
genuine Syrup of Figs is manufactured
hv the California Fio Syrup Co.
only. a knowledge of that fact will
assist one in avoiding the worthless
imitations manufactured by other par
ties. The high standing of the Cali-
FoftNiA 110 Syrup Co. with the medi
cal profession, and the satisfaction
which the genuine Syrup of Figs has
given to millions of families, makes
the name of the Company a guaranty
of the excellence of its remedy. It is
far in advance of all other laxatives,
as it acts on the kidneys, liver and
be vels without irritating or weaken
ing them, and it does not gripe nor
nauseate. In ordertoget its beneficial
effects, please remember the name of
the Company —

The announcement Saturday morn
ing of the death of Prof. 1). W. Van
Riper, while not unexpected, was re
ceived with deepest sorrow throughout
the city. His death is a personal loss
to every citizen, for everyone esteemed
him as a friend, true aud tried, and
against whom never a word of reproach
was said.
It was tho passing of one of nature’s
noblemen; an upright man of strictest
integrity, a Christian gentleman.
Some time ago Prof. Van Riper had
a severe illness from which he never
completely recovered, and at his ad
vanced age—nearly 74 years—he was
unable to withstand tho severe lung
trouble that attacked him nearly a
week ago. Since that time ho has been
gradually sinking until the eud enrne
at 1 o’clock Saturday moruing, aud
ripe in years replete with usefulness
he passed to a bright reward on high.
A wife and three sons, Messrs Hen
ry W, George and Charles E. Van
Riper survive him, and to them the
deep sympathy of the entire communi
ty is extended. "
The deceased was a native of New
Jersey but for moro than forty years
has lived iu the South, having resi
ded at Charleston, S. C., Macon, Co
lumbus and Fort Valley, Ga. prior to
the removal of the fumily to Americas
nearly twenty years ago. He was in
the Confederate service for a year or
more aud at the close of the war went
to Nassau, where for awhile he follow
ed his profession as photographer, but
soon returned to New York and thence
to Georgia.
Prof. Van Riper was a man of unu i-
ual intelligence, a deep thinker, and
his opinion upon subjects of impor
tance was often sought by those who
knew him best. He was a member of
the Presbyterian church, and his life
was as blameless as that of mortal
could be.
Tho funeral services were con
ducted at 9:30 o’clock Sunday moruiug
from the residence of Prof. Henry Van
Riper, on Forsyth street, by Rev. Le
Roy G. Henderson, concluding at Oak
Grove cemetery. Council Lodge F.
A A. M. and Camp Sumter Confeder
ate Veterans likewise paid tribute
to their deceased brother and former
comrade in arms.

An Intereating Murder CaseConclud
ed in Savannah. |
The press dispatches contained re
cently an account of the killing'Of Wm
Wilcox by William Wright in Savannah
by sticking a crowbar in the neck of
his victim. The trial of the murderer,
Wright, aroused considerable interest
ami has just been concluded. The Sav
annah Press contained tbe following
acconnt of tbe proceedings which is of
local interest from the fact that Mr.
Shelby Myrick was leading counsel for
tbe defense.
“The trial of William Wright for the
mnrder of William Willcox was con
eluded in the superior court last even
iug. The jury wa9 out about 20 min
utes aud returned a verdict of guilty,
with a reeommendation of mercy.
Judge Falligant sentenced Wright to
life imprisonment iu the penitentiary’.
Messrs. Myrick and Fred Saussy, who
defended Wright, are thinking about
appealing for a new trial. Mr. Myrick
made a powerful argument in favor of
Wright aud the saving of the negro's
neck is attributed to his efforts.”
