CAVING DIRT ENTOMBS THREE
WORKMEN
ft

THOUGH ALL RESCUED A LI 7
One Remains Buried to Shoulders for
Three Hours.—Immense Crowd
Witness Work of Rescue.—
Much Excitement.
Three workmen engaged in making
excavations for the Lee street water
mains were buried alive yesterday by
the caving of one side of the deep ditch.
The accident occurred shortly before
4 o'clock and whiles gang of 4:1 negroes
■Were working in the trenches. Three
of these, Marshall Hoskins, Hob Hunt
er and Louis Golden, wero working
together immediately opposite Fnrlow
Lawn Baptist chnrch and in n section
of the ditch where the depth w as ghoul
fourteen feet.
The ditch parallels another Lee
street main, and it was the intervening
dirt that fell upon thennfortuuatemen.
In a memcct the most intense ex- j
citement prevailed among the other)
workmen, as the report that a dozen
men had been bnried alive or killed
outright flew in every direction. From
every part of the city people rushed to
the scene of accident, and within
Very short time a crowd of perhaps
2,000 had gathered about the spot. A
police detail had to be sent out to keep
some of the excited ones from falling
in the ditch as well.
In the meantime Snpt. Ausloy and
Overseer Henderson wero working
energetically to rescue the three en
tombed negroes.
Fortunately the ditch had been
braced at the top, and while some of
the timbers fell with the caving dirt
enough remained to afford the entomb
ed men air. All were caught in i
standing position, Louis Golden being
Lttried to bis neck.
After a half hoar’s work Hoskins was
taken out only slightlv braised. It
took two hours to dig the dirt from
around Bob Hunter, while Lewis
Golden was not brought to the surface
until nearly 7 o’eloek last night. He
was the worst hnrt of the three, sus
taining internal injuries besides har
ing two ribs broken. All of the men
were considerably bruised and the
worst scared darkies that ever lived.
Overseer Henderson is couiident
that every man w as rescued, sb he
called the roll last night and each of
the 48 men employed on the work
answered to his name. It was indeed
a miraculous esenpe.
