WOMAN'S SUPERIORITY.
Genial and gifted Tom Loyless, of
the Macon Evening News, dips his pen
deep down into that big heart of his
and draws forth the following touching
and beautiful inspiration to woman,
which will be read and appreciated by
hundreds of his admiring friends in
the state. He says of God’s best and
fairest gift to man:

A CRYING EVIL
It has been figured out that only
•boot one fourth of the cotton mills in
the United States are located in the
aonth—the home of cotton aud the
proper place for its mannfaetnre. Bare
ly this is a crying evil. With every
advantage of successful manufacture
on our side, it is more than strange
that the growth of this manufacturing
industry is not faster. Our moneyed
men are too fearful of loss from any
venture to go into the matter with that
CAN A CHURCH MEMBER HANDLE

Clarke county and the city of Athens
maintain a local dispensary, which was
adopted as a compromise on the liquor
question—between barrooms and pro
hibition.
The manager of the dispensary is a
Baptist in good standing and member
ship in the First Baptist chnrch in
Athens. Now the Baptists of Center,
Ga., five miles from Athens, have no
tified the Athens chnrch that they have
boldness eminently necessary to sne- • wilhdrawn their fe,loW8hi " on account

opment of cotton manufacturing is so
•low is that the crop mortgage system
has given them a rate of interest liter
ally unheard of in other fields of in
vestment. Jf the men who loan the
croppers would consider the probabili
ties of loss and the infinite worry occa
sioned by their risky investments, they
wonld no doubt more readily consider
the matter of cotton milling. Tiie
Times-Reoordeii has for years urged
the necessity of building a cotton fac

onr farmers will be independent of
Wall street speculators, and can hope
to command fair returns for their Inbor

It is not at all surprising that fair-
minded and independent men aro un
willing to setve on the commission to
investigate the conduct of the war de
partment. If the process of white-
washing Alger will serve to screen the
administration, why then he will cer
tainly be whitewashed—and mark the
prediction^ of The Timek-Recouueh
more than one Georgia congressman
will join in this whitewashing scheme.
It is said that Col. Roosevelt has
prepared a review of the campaign in
Cuba, which will be made public as
soon as he becomes a private citizen
again. Being thorongbly honest, fear
less and an exceedingly plain-siuken
man, the public may expect some rare
and racy reading. It is not likely
that he failed to remember that betrayal
of confidence and unwarrantedrebnke.

The Athens Baptist say that if liqnqr

the two churches will be settled by the
Baptist convention, which convenes on

question has greatly stirred the church

outcome will bo watched with interest

Immediately after the gallant admiral
destroyed the Spanish fleet it was
thought by many that Aguinaldo and
his follow ers wonld assist onr forces
in capturing Manila, but it was a vain
thongbt. Aguinaldo adopted a sullen
and semi-hostile attitude and it was
not definitely known whether he was
friend or foe.
The latest from Aguinaldo gives
fresh evidence of his unreliability and
nlso of bis overweaning desire to
dictate terms to Americans,
Spaniards and any one else who hap
pens to tresspnss on his preserves.

gence, greed, the selfishness, the seif
assertive impudence of man. Taken
in the aggregate these opposites fit the
sexes. There are exceptions, of course,

they are the superior of man in all
their qualities. You see them every

way along the narrow path, her heart
torn aud stricken, her feet tired and
her whole being weary with the utter
hopelessness of it all. She has never
a word to speak of complaint. She
never falters in her duty, she clings
by the highest standard of morality,
never wavers, and in her prayers she
is full of expectation in the future.

If some editors not a hundred miles
away, who are now slobbering over
Capt. Evan P. Howell’s appointment
on the wsr investigating committee,
should refer to their flies they would
doubtless be reminded of some slan
derous things they said of him when he
was making the race for United States
senator that don't tally with their
present laudatory remarks. Capt.
Howell was the same able, patriotic,
fearlesB democrat that he is today.
TnE Times-Recordek was for him for

thing he wants, either in the gift of the
president or the people.
The life of Emperor Francis Joseph
has been u succession of tragedies. His
brother was executed in Mexico; his
son, an only child, committed suicide,
and his wife was stricked down by an
Italian assassin.
Mahdi of the Pacific, and his replies
show him no man to be reckoned with.
When it did not suit him to answer the
correspondent he turned interviewer
himself aud asked the correspondent
questions. He flattered us by assert
ing he considered us “brothers, two
sovereign republics allied against a
common enemy.” Concerning the fu
ture policy of the Filipinos, the atti
tude of the Filipinos if we retained
Manila, if the Filipinos would object
to us having a coaling station, the
wily Aguinaldo begged to be excused
from answering. He was very prompt
to sav, however, that the Spaniards
were “dissembling false reports for
the purpose of fomenting antagonism
between the Filipinos and the Ameri
cans.” And that he expected the with
drawal of the Americans just “as the
French with Lafayette withdrew after
helping the Americans in the war of
independence, a war of hnmanity.”
The astute insurgent was also kind
enough to convey to the Americau peo
pic, through the medium of the Asso
ciated Press, that he has 07,000 soldiers
armed with rifles, and that in fact the
the whole population was willing to
fight for their independence. In other
words, for the privilege of boosting of
holdiDg in subjection ten million Ma
lays, half breeds and savages because,
forsooth, "wherever the flag once
floats there must it float forever,” The
United States of America will bo com
pelted to send an army of from 50,000 to
100,000 men to the Philippines whose
duty it will be to keep in subjection
tho Filipinos until they can be tanglit
nineteenth century methods of civili
zation, and until the missionary socie
ties can furnish them clothes. The
troops must at the same time be pre
pared to flgbt Asiatic cltolcn and other
ills known to tho Pacific isles, which
lie near the equator. The game is not
worth tho candle. We are not in need
of the Philippines. The entire import
trade of the islands are not worth ten
million per annum, and if we adopt the
policy of the open door there is noth
ing to prevent Japan and other nu'.ions
more favorably situated fordoing busi
ness in that part of the world from ab
sorbing the bulk of the trade for them
selves. We owe the Filipinos a stable I

SONG OF THE BULLET.
It whizzed and whistled along the blurred
And red-bleat ranks, and It nicked the star
Of an epaulet as It snarled the word—
War!
On he sped, and the lifted wrist
Of the ensign-bearer stung, and straight
Dropped at his side, as the word was hissed—
Hate:
On went the missile-smoothed the blue
Of a Jaunty cap and the curls thereof,
Cooing soft as a dove might do—
Love!
Sang or—sang on! Sang hate—sang war—
Sang love, in sooth, till It needs must cease
Hushed In the heart It was questing, or—
Peace!
