WITH HON. E. B. LEWIS HERE
THURSDAY.
GREETED BY LARGE AUDIENCE.
Both Distinguished Speakers Loudly
Applauded as They Discuss the
Issues of the Day Before
the People of Sumter.
Hon. Allen. D. Candler and Hon.
E. B. Lewis carried Sumter county
overwhelmingly Thursday, though it
was only a skirmish attack wherein
eloquence and logic were used instead
of ballots. Bat the eff ect was the same
and the ballots will be theirs by a very
large majority when the real lighting
bourns in October.
The throng gathered Thursday to
listen to these distinguished gentlemen
was surprisingly large when it is con
sidered that farmers are busy now
gathering cotton. Not only from Sum
ter hut iroin neighboring counties as
well did they come, and an audience of
perhaps 3,000 had assembled about the
speaker’s stand iu the grove near the
Central depot when the guests of hon
or arrived at 10 o’clock.
Democrats and populists, white and
colored voters alike were there to do
honor to Georgia's next governor and
our able representative in congress.
From $ until 10 o’clock Col. Candler
and Mr. Lewis held a public recaption
at tho Windsor Hotel. During these
two hours huudreds of ladies and gen
tlemen called and paid their respects
to the distinguished visitors. At 10
o’clock Col Candler, accompanied by
Judge J. B. Pilsbnry, Hon. E. B.
Lewis and Mrs. M. L. Myrick were
driven to the place of speaking. May
or Hixon, Judge J. A. Ansley. Jndge
John N. Scarborough, *Mr. Charles it.
Crisp, M-. E. C. Speer, Hon. W. A.
Dodson, Capt. John A, Cobb and other
prominenteitizons.wero iu the compa
ny and occupied seats upon the stand.
Mayor Hixon opened the ceremc ■
nies with an eloquent and fitting trib
ute to Hon. E. B. Lewis. Mr. Lewis
responded in a speech of 40 minutes,
which was most favorably and enthu
siastically received.
He reviewed briefly the republican
party for the Inst few years and proved
conclusively to his hearers that if the
people expected relief from taxation
and flnancial depression they must ad
here to the democratic party, the party
of the people and the party which had
ever legislated for equal rights to all
and special privileges to none. He
touched nr on bis own record in con
gress, giving his views and standing
upon the great <1116811011 of the war
with Spain, tie pointed oat the imme
diate needs of ihe country and to what
the probable nctiou of the next congress
would be as to questions of fiuunce and
state. Mr. Lewis, while an aggressive
and public-spirited man showeu conclu
sively by his argument that it was not
the best thing lor the South for the
United Slates to a’quire loo much new
territory. He approved the complet
ing of the Nicaragua cauul and gave
reasons why this great enterprise
should he carried out. <
.The speech was indeed a good ono
and made Mr. Lewis many new and
strong friends here.
Jndge J. B. Pllsbary, chairman of
the county democratic executive com
mittee, made a most 1 atriotic, strong
and able speech of some length upon
the yirtuesof the warrior-statesman who
liud never been found wuutiug iu any
duty imposed upon him by his country
or his fellow countrymen. Judge Pils
bnry grew elcqnent when he spoke of
Col. Gaudier as a soldier, and his every
utterance was greeted with applause.
His introductory remarks of Georgia's
next governor were iusi iriug uud wor
thy of the honest, patriotic democrat
who spoke them
Colonel Candler arose, and with a
stroug and pleasing address thauked
his distinguished brother soldier for
his very complimentary introductory
speech. He thon paid Lis respects to
the audience and “his fellow country- |
men” as he termed them, for their
gracious presence. His remarks about
ourater county, and his feeling and
touching tribute to the lamented
Crisp touched a sympathetic chord in
the heart of everyone present.
Col. Candler then lanuched forth
upon matters of sta e, making one of
the strongest aud most forcible
speeches ever made in this city. He
showed his record to he that of a con
sistent democrat for the past twenty
y, ars. He said he bad introduced a
bill in congress sixteen years ago for
the restoration of silver. While re-
spcctfnl ho scored the populists for
their inconsistencies and unfair meth
ods. He deplored tho fact that tho
democ atic party had never been in
harness long enough and clothed with
power sufficient to enforce aud carry
out the teuetB and doctrines most dear
to the South, He promised the negro
protection aud a fair aud square ueal
under his administration should he bo
elected governor. There was no smack
of demagoguery about any utterance
Colonel Candler made. His speech
was without frills but one of sound
argument, common sense and unde-
tiled democracy and was a voto winner.
Col. Candler said ho had not come to
Americas to make a set speech, but to
become acquainted with the people of
Sumter, meet them face to ta r 3 and
thank them for the loyal support ex
tended him iu liis gubernatorial race.
He wound up his speech with an invi-
tatiou to alt disgruntled factions to
harmonizeund return to the democatic
party. Especially did he u.ge upon
democrats the necessity of ti’Miing out
upon the day of election, October .1th,
and doing their full duty towards roll
ing up Georgia’s usual 1 .jority of one
hundred thousand. He bode every
man to come to the polls and to see that
his neighbor came as well.
There was not a harsh word ottered
by the grand old man from Hall, and
those who did not know him are glad
to know him now and his praises will
be snug throughout thie section, for
the impression he made yesterday in
his matchless speech was that of an
ioriebt, honest man and an unflinch
ing and brave democrat, jnst inch a
man as ail good people want for gov
ernor of Georgia.

The fact that many Americus soldier
boys are among the volunteers at Camp
Thomas renders the condition of affairs
there one of interest and solicitude to
many here.
So rnuoh has been published about
the condition at Camp Thomas that the
figures of the death rate, now that the
soldiers have practically all gone to
the new camping grounds, will be in
teresting. While the death rate was
bad enough, it was not nearly so enor
mous as the prevailing impression
wonld have i(. The alarming rate
did not set in until the summer was
well over.
It was in the early part of August
that typhoid fever began to make in
roads on the various regimental camps.
The unsanitary conditions which re-
snlted in so serious a situation were
plain to any one who had oocasion to
visit the park. On an average there
were encamped at the park during May,
Jane, Jaly and August abont 411,000
men. Out of this number, according
to official reports, there were 077 deaths
at Camp Thomas from the outset of the
encampment of the troops up to Sep
tember 11, Of this number tiff were
buried in the National cemetery at
Chattanooga, the bodies of the remain
der having have been sent to their re
spective states.
Following are the total number of
deaths for each month: May, 17; Jane,
187; Jaly, 33; August, 101); and for the
first ten days of September 00. There
are yet at Camp Thomas about 700 sick
soldiers in the Sternbnrg and Leiter
hospitals. The number is daily grow
ing less by reason of deaths and fur
loughs. >

First Trial in Georgia of Rural Mail
Delivery.
It is more than probable that at no
distant day the farmers of Snmter
county will have their mail delivered
daily at their doors instead of being
compelled to come to Americus or to
their nearest country postofflee for it.
The rural mail delivery is destined to
.work a revolution in this respect and
already the system has been establish
ed in Newton county. A mail carrier
is to be put on the circuit who will
make the round trip once a day. He
will deliver the mail free to the people
along the route, will sell them stamps,
gather up all mail matter to be sent off
and retnrn to the central station at
night. The circuit delivery will be
abont twenty-three or twenty four
miles around aud will cover a radios of
abont eight miles. This will be a great
convenience to the many people iu the
country designated and the free deliv
ery of the mails directly id tho people
will soon become very popular.

was marketed. Farmers were disposed
