Ron. E.B. Lewis and Mayor J. A.
Hixon leave by the 1:06 Central train
this afternoon for Washington.
As announced in yesterday's Timbs-
Becokdeh, Mr. Lewis came here to
connnlt with Mayor Hixon and mem-
■ bers of the eity council in reference to
the camp site and the best plans to be'
, pursued in presenting to the War De
partment the advantages possessed by
Americusasaplacefor a military en
campment.
The gentlemen met early yesterday
morning and the subject was thorough
ly disoussed for several hours.
—' Mr. Lewis was theh driven out to the
site selected for the camp, and after
inspecting it thoroughly give it as his
opinion that it was most admirable in
every respect. In the meantime Mr.
Lewis had wired Adjutant General
Corbin to know just when General
Schwann would reaoh Washington
from his tour of inspection in Georgia
in search of desirable camp sites.
Upon being informed that General after several days reached Americas
Schwann would reach Washington to
morrow, Mr. Lewis and Mayor Hixon
decided to go ou at once in the interest
of Amerieus.
Both gentlemen are now in position
to speak advisedly in regard to the
location offered by this city, and
baoked by the favorable opinion of
Gen.'Schwann it is believed that their
objeet may be accomplished and at
least a goodly number of the troops
seoured for Amerieus. Mr. Lewis ana
Mayor Hixon will certainly put forth
their best efforts to this end and are
hopeful of success.
However, Americas has strong oppo
sition in all the larger cities of the
state, eaoh of which is fighting for the
same prize, and the result eannot be
easily foretold. It may yet be several
weeks before a decision in the matter
is rendered by the War Department.
BOUGHT STOCK OF LIQUORS.
B. H. Jossey to Enter Business in
Montgomery.
Mr. B. H. Jossey returned yesterday
from Montgomery, Ala , wheretbeday
before he purchased from E. A. Kobn
& Co., wholesale and retail liqnordeal-
ers, the retail branch of their business
on Commerce street. Kobn & Co. will
engage in the wholesale trade exclu
sively, ocoupyibg another store- near
their present place of business. Mr.
Jossey will conduct an extensive retail
business in Montgomery, though he
will not have a saloon connected there
with. He will remain in Americas at
least until January 1st. placing his
store in Montgomery in oharge of a
competent man as manager on next
Monday.
Private Clarence Mize of Company
B. First Georgia Begiment, was car
ried to Macon a prisoner yesterday.
It is understood that young Mize is
charged with desertion, and that his
little escapade at home may resnlt very
seriously for him. Out of oompassion
for the young soldier the arresting ot-
floer did not put handcuffs on him un
til after they boarded the Central train
yesterday afternoon, though he had
peremptory orders to bring his prisoner
to Macon in irons. The two resehed
Camp Price last night, where; the regi
ment is now stationed. t
Private Mize was arrested by Ser
geant Chas. Willis of Company B. who
stated the circumstances substantially
i follows:
About three weeks ago Private Mize
asked leave of absence to return to
his home in Amerious, showing a tele
gram announcing that his father, Mr.
J. W. Mize, was seriously ill. His re
quest was granted, but shortly after
his departure the officers lot his com
pany had reason to suspect the genu-
iness of the telegram and young Mize
was ordered to report back to camp at
once. But "he never oame back” and

he.requests assistance
where he has been ever since.
While here Private Mize deoided to
lay aside the rifle for the orange wreath,
at least for the time, and was about to
be married to a young lady living near
the city. He had the marriage license
in his pocket when palled by Sergeant
Willis.
It is not known what will be"done
with Private Mize. He is a young
fellow, hardly out of his teens, and
this, coupled with the fact that the
war is over, may render the sentence
lighter. If he is in reality a deserter,
as charged, the penalty would be death,
but there is no danger of such extreme
measures in this case. His family and
friends here are considerablygtronbled
over the affair, as well they may be.
When arrested yesterday Private
Mize was plaoed in the county jail by
Sergeant Willis until the departure of
the train for Macon, Yonng; Mize left
the regiment at Knoxville some three
weeks ago.
MANY DEBTS ARE BEING PAID.
LOOKS LIKE A FATALITY.
An Instance Where Misfortune Comet
Doable.
The severe aooident to Mr. J. H.
Cooper a few days siuce, resulting' in
the breaking of one of his limbs at the
ankle, eonpled with the almost critical
illness of htr. Ed Sims seems, under
the circumstances, like a fatality.
Both these young men had recently
accepted lucrative positions in Mis-
sissipi as superintendents on one of
the largest cotton plantations in
the South, and were to have started
together in two or three weeks to enter
upon their new duties. Now, however
Mr. Cooper has met with an accident
that may incapacitate him for business
for weeks, while Mr Sims’ recovery
from a critical illness is still a question
of grave doubt.
Fanners Are Fast Discharging Their
Obligations. ,
Do-pito the low price of cotton and
consequent general cry of bard times,
farmers in this section are discharging
their obligations with the banks and
supply merohants in a manner quite
satisfactory to the latter. And this is
being done with 41 and 5 cent ootton,
whereas a year ago the farmers of Sum
ter received about 88 per bale more for
cotton than ie being paid them now. A
Tiuks-Recordcb representative took
occasion to inquire yesterday among
bankers and supply merchants as to
collections, and heard little if, any
complaint upon this score. In net,
one of the leading supply houses here
has already collected a larger amount
than at this time last year, despite the
faot that the ootton crop is full three
weeks late and short besides. The far
mers are doing their best to pay ont
promptly, and with close eoonomy will
start even another year.
Spaniards Are Said to Be Doing AH
In Their PoVrer to Make Insurgent
Situation Throughout Santa Clara
Province More Terrible.
WasaixsTON, Sept. 26. — Telegram*
were received at the Onban legation last
night from commissioners who arrived
at Key West, vent to this country by
General Gomez, the Cuban Bsnrgent
leader. These telegrams depict the
situation In the province of Santa Clara
as most critical. The Cuban army is
said to bo starving. The vegetables are
almost gone and the last mules and
horses have been killed to feed the sick.
The children and old people are said to
be dying by the dozous every day.
The general appeals for aid and says
his men are desperate.
The Spanish are doing all they can to
make the insurgent situation more ter
rible. It is feared that serious results
may arise from this and the Cubans
cannot be blamed if they are forced to
take the necessaries of life. This they
can do by capturing a town, but the
Cubans hare pledged themselves not to
violate the armistice and they, there*
fore, appeal to the United Stales in or
der to avoid a conflict.

The written evidence which would

Charley Robin,i n Commltts Fratri
cide Near the State Line,
Grrf.nville, a 0., Sept. 20.—News
has reached here of a horrible crime
near Caesar Head. Charley Robinson
killed his elder brother, Berry Robin
son. The fratricide was bronght abont
by a slight qnarrel concerning a nutmeg
grater. Charley Hobiuson, who is toll
gatekeeper, and has been driving for the
Caesar Head hotel this summer, went to
his brother's house under the influence
of whisky and emptied one barrel of his
shotgun into his brother’s heart.
The shooting was in North Carolina,
in sight of the state line, over 8 miles
from Caesar Head. Charley Robinson
lives in Gresnville county, S. 0. He is
now in the Transylvania county fall, at
Brevard, and is prostrated over his rash
deed. He is a married man with nine
children.
Berry Robinson leaves a wife bnt no
children. They were known to be on
good terms tho day of tho shooting and
the affair has caused great regret among
the mountain people, among whomjtho
Robinsons are a prominent family. '
