Paris, Sept. 29.—The United State*
fieace commission held another confer
ence this morning, after which, accom
panied by the United States ambassa
dor, General Horace Porter, they drove
to the foreign office, where the commis
sioners met and breakfasted with the
Spanish commissioners. In addition to
the commissioners and the ambassador,
the minister of foreign affairs, M. Del
eave, had invited the three head offi
cials of the French foreign office, the
first secretaries of the embassies, and
General ikgrou, secretary of the Elysee
.palace.
The French newspapers continue to
comment upon the difficulties which the
two commission*will have to face by
reason of their divergent instructions,
beyond which, it is said, they cannot go.

Spanish peace commissions assembled

the Confederacy Now.
Chicago, Sept 29.—Miss Lucy Lee
Hill, an examiner in the office of the
civil service commission, is the new
Daughter of the Confederacy. Her
•outhem friends have conferred this
honor upon her since the death of Miss
•Winnie Davis.
Miss Hill is a uativo of Virginia, and
pomes from one of tho oldest and most
Aristocratic families in the south. She
la a distant relative of General Fitz-
fcugh Lee.
In 1893 she camo to Chicago as one of
fho World’s Fair commissioners from
Kentucky, aud since then has made this
city her home. She has been engaged

I Atlanta, Sept. 29.—The resignation
of Judge Marcus W. Beck of tho Flint
circuit has brought about an interesting
light for the placo and two applications
have already been filed with Governor
Atkinson. They are Messrs. E. J. Ragan
of McDouougb aud J. Y. Allen of
Xbomastou.
’ Suit Against tile Klrkmiuis.
Nashville, Oct. 1.—The American
Jfational bank has brought suit against
Van L. Kirkmpn and wile, seeking to
recover on 11 nctes, aggregating $BS,v
810.82, collateral held, it is stated, to be
far less than the amount due and an-
thorny is asked to sell this and apply
the proceeds. The recent deed of trust,
.node by V. L. Kirk mail to Mrs. Kirk-
man, by which he conveyed all bis
property to secure a debt of $100,000, is
attacked as fraudulent.
t Looking For a Prison Site.
Atlanta, Oct. 1.—The state prison
commissioners returned to this qity ,o-
d.y after spending two days in inspect
ing proffered sites along the Georgia
road—in Morgan, Greene and Taliaferro
comma?—and expressed themselves as
tnuch pleased, but were noncommittal.
They said their decision would be an-

d’Orsay. A special entrance is set apart
for the nso of the commissioners in
order to furnish them with eve-y
privacy and convenience possible.
On entering, easy steps lead to a large
anteroom. Extending theuco in front
of tho building is a suite of three great
rooms, overlooking the river Seine. In
front of the windows are balconies con
taining large vases filled with growing
plants.
Next to tho anteroom is a spacious re
ception room. The floor is covered with
beautiful crimson velvet carpet and the
furniture consists of a satin divan in
the entree with a mwnber of easy chairs
around the walls. Rich, heavy draw
ings adorn the windows and there is
just enough statuary in the place to
make it artistic.
Tho next room is of similar appear-
snee, may be termed a lounging saloon.
It connects with a larger apartment, in
which an exquisite lunch is spread for
the private use of the commissioners. It
joins the conference chamber.
Tho entire suite of rooms may bo de
scribed os being of massive appearance.
Handsome, crystal chandeliers hang
from the ceiliugs, and the walls are
wholly paneled with gobelin tapestries.
You enter the conference hall through
maguifleent double portiers. In the
center of the hall, and extending nearly
tho length of the apartment, is a massive
rosewood table covered with a red vel
vet tablecloth aud having arouud it
large, handsome chairs for the use of
the commissioners.
Before each chair is a largo, leather-
bound portfolio and a tray, upon which
are peucils, an ink eraser, a file hook,
quill and steel pens, a China ink well
aud a sponge cup.
This apartment is carpeted with ma
roon and gold, and the walls and ceil
ings are of deep olive and gold. It con
tains five great windows draped with
silk and priceless lace curtains. They
overlook the beautiful private garden of
the foreign minister, which contains ex
quisite statuary and some rare trees and
shrubs.

BRYAN’S REGIMENT TO GO.
Third Nebraska Will He Mustered Out
In the Near Future.
Washington, Oct. 1.—Tho president
and Secretary Alger have decided to
leave the selection of the Nebraska reg-
meat to be mustered out to Governor
Holcomb.
It has been tho custom of the depart
ment to muster out the regiments which
havo seen tho lougcst service. If tbit
should bo followed tho First at Manila
would be mustered out before the Third,
of which Colonel William Jcnniugi
Bryau is commander.
In other states tho governors have
been consulted, and the department did
uot caro to make un exception in this
instance. Governor Holcomb has inter
ested himself in tho musteriug out of
the Third aud there is no doubt that ho
will select Colouel Brvau’s regiment
and make tho necessary recommenda
tion.
Tho Second Nebraska was among the
first regimmits named for musteriug
out, but this order will be revoked
