WOMAN ON TRIAL FOR LIFE
MRS. M'GUIRT WHO KILLED HER
HUSBAND
•Will Probably Be Tried Thu Week at
Webster Court for Crime-8hort
Story of Tragedy Which
May Send Her to
the Gallows.
Solicitor General Hooper and mem
t,ers of the Americus bar who have
l^eii at Dooly court for three weeks
returned on Sunday, and Sunday af
teruoon went to Preston to attend
Webster superior conrt.
Of the several cases to be tried at
tliii, session none arouses as much in
terest as that of Mrs. McGuirt for ki!
line her husband, John McGuirt, in
August last. Mr. McGnirt was a farm 1
ernf modest means living near Pres-
tou, uud bis murder aroused great
indignation in that section. The mur
deress was arrested and placed in jail
at l’reston, and will bo tried for her
life this week.
Mrs. McGuirt is fifty years old, and
appears to care but little for her unfor
tunate situation and the fact that she
stands wit bin til: shadow of the gal
lows.
In an interview after the tragedy the
woman is quoted as saying that she
killed McGuirt because he wanted to
go away and leave his crop. One
morning he tried to slip away from
her. She followed him two miles and
found him sitting by the roadside,
Seizing a piece of plank she slipped up
behind and killed him with a single
blow. McGuirt was not aware of his
wife's presence until she struck the
fatal blow.
The McGuirt woman is said to have
remarked that now her object had been
accomplished she cared not what fate
hud in store for her. She is confined
in the same jail occupied by SuBan
Eberhart 20 years ago, the only woman
ever hanged in Georgia.

Hundreds of Enthusiastic Members
Attend Session.
After a three days profitable and in
teresting session at Oglethorpe, the
Friendship Baptist Association ad
journed Thursday at noon. Over a
hundred ministers from this section of
the state were iu attendance from the
beginning, each one taking an active
part in the exerci«es. Many prominent
divines, among whom were Dr. G H.
Nunnally, president of the LaGrange
Female College, Kev. J. Howard Car
penter, of Dawson, Rev. Bam C. Dean
and Bev. R. L, Bivins, of Americas,
and numbers of others were present.
Sermons were delivered by many of
the ministers, and taken as a whole the
sessiou was the most interesting in the
history of the association. The next
meeting will be held at Plains, i
Americas.
ON THIRTY DAYS LEAVE.
Soldiers of First Georgia Will Soon
Be at Home.
The Americus soldier boys in the
First Georgia will probably reach home
this week. Arrangements are being
made by railroads to carry to their
homos all soldiers of the First Georgia
regiment who want to be mastered out.
The mustering officer is already in Ma
con at work. All who live 100
miles from Macon may secure dis
charge and be sent home, while those
living in and around Macou may se
cure a verbal parole to report to regi
mental headquarters thirty days hence.
The indications are that a large per
ceut. of tho soldiers will avail them
selves of the opportunity to get ont of
the service.
