THE AMEBIC OS WEEKLY TIMES-RECORDER: FRIDA* OCTOBER 14, 1898.
I flie Soldiers Are Certainly
Comma;.
SOUTH GETS 52,000 TROOPS
jjjird North Carolina, Twelfth New
York and Eighth Massachusetts
the Three Regiments Assigned
to Americus, Making Sec
ond Brigade.
As announced in The Tiubs-Becobd-
ilispatclies Saturday morning,
I Americas gots three regiments of
I rotted States troops comprising the
| Seeded brigade, Second division of
first Army Corps, Major General
Breckinridge commanding. The three
■intents assigned to Americus are the
I Third North Carolina, Twelfth New
Jerk and Eighth Massachusetts.
The Massachusetts and New York
I teoimeutsare composed of white troops,
while the North Carolina regiment is
! made up entirely of negroes.
There was considerable disposition
I yesterday to discuss the advisability of
| lending a negro regiment to a city the
: of Americus, many people being
I of the opinion that a larger city, per
haps. would have been a better place
for these sable lighters of Uncle Sam.
I At the same time the opinion expressed
of one of the other regiments assigned
here, the 12th New York, was by no
means complimentary, especially that
of the returned soldier boys who knew
| the New Yorkers at Chickamauga.
Bat it is altogether a mistaken idea
| to suppose that the average soluior,
white o- black, pays no attention to
[ law and order and “paints the town,
red" at ircqtient intervals. That may
have been the case when the volunteers
I raw and undisciplined men, first en
tered the service six months ago, but
all ce uuder better control now.
And it is sincerely to be hoped that
I the tb-ee regiments assigned to Amer-
[ ions will be no exception to the rule.
In cve'-y city where the volunteer
troops have been encamped, business
I has increased to a wonderful degree.
The payroll of a regiment amounts to
about SAT,COO per mooth, so that the
l oops scut here will have disHbuted
among them morothan $'00,COO month
ly. The volunteer soldier is not a
saver of shekels, and ordinarily he
“blows in" his entire month’s wages
n.thin a week after he receives it from
the paymaster.
Bcs.hes, whenever possibto all need
ed supplies ov e purebusod in the town
where the camp is located, so that it
mav safely bo estimated that TO,COO
! bo disbursed in Americus mouthly
by the military, and of this the d-y
ncrcUaut, the grocer, the tailor,
the jewele 1 *, u,Agist, photographer,
itationo' and, in fact atl.classes of
tradesmen get a share.
If tw o brigades are scut here, ns has
been ajumuced, the monthly dis
bursements would exceed fdOO.OOO.
Surely this can’t be bad.
to when the ' oops will crive
here nothing positive is known. The
movement involved in the reorganiza
tion aud assignment of the troops now
is Northern camps will begin about
Oct. r, so that it maybe su mised
that bur quota will frive early in No
vember. As far as practicable the
movements of ihe several regiments
will be timed so that only one regi
ment will arrive at a particn’ar camp
thesaure day.
MRS. M’GUIRTGOES TO PRISON
GETS TWO YEARS FOR KILLING
HER HUSBAND.
Sensational Case in Webster is Con
cluded.—To Prevent a Mistrial
Counsel Agrees Upon Verdict
For Unfortunate Woman.
Mrs. McGuirt, the Webster county
murderess, will spend the next two
years of her life in tbejstate poniteutia-
ry for killiug her aged husband in
August last.
The sensational trial came to a con
elusion at a late hour Friday night.
For moro than twenty-four hours the
jury had deliberated over tbe case
without beiug able to reach an agree
ment. A mistrial was predicted, aud
as the hours wore on and tlin jury still
could not determine the fate ot the
unfortunate white woman on trial for
her life, Judge Littlejohn had them
brought into court again.
It was then ascertained that tbe
“twelve good men and true” stood
eleven for involuntary manslaughter
aud one for murder with recommenda
tion to mercy.
This had been the status of the case
for some time, and there wai no pros
pect of an agreement between the
jurors. After the jury had again re
tired counsel for the state and defense
consulted together. The poor woman
pleaded piteously that a mistrial be
not declared, as she preferred even
death to another six mouths in jail.
Then there were extenuating circum
stances greatly in her favor, and final
ly tbe several attorneys reached an
agreement satistactory toall concerned
1 his was, in substance, that inas
much as the jury could not agree, the
court direct a verdict of voluntary
manslaughter.
eveu death, she said, was belter
woo for her much sympathy.
