HANNA MAY DECLINE

The Condition of Ui3 Ecalth

tlonul Committee t it »* i mi :| n - h i p.
Cleveland, Deo. l.—Concerning the
reports which have been in circulation i
lor several weeks past to the effect that
Senator Hanna would not succeed him*
sell as than man of the national Repub
lican committee, it can be stated on au
thority of Mr. Hanna’s most intimate
friends that he has no desire to manage
another campaign and that nnless very
strong pressure is brought to bear upon
him he will, in all probability, decline
to do so..
Notwithstanding the published state'
ments that many loading Republicans
throughout the conntry are opposed to
Ur. Hanna’s re appointment as chair
man of the committeo it is kiiown that
he is almost daily receiving from indu
sntiai party leaders representing practi
, calls* all sections of the conntry letters
to the effect that he has thoir fullest
continence and support and urging that
be is the strongest man available for
the placs.
Ur. Hanna’s closest friends, snd in
deed, the members of his own family
beliove, however, that the condition of
his health is such that be should not
' tinder any circnmstances assume the re
sponsibility of managing another presi
dential campaign.
It has been suggested that should Mr.
Hanna decide not to accept a reappoint
ment as chairman that be be made >
member of the executive committee,
having personal charge of the campaign
finances.
This would, it is pointed out, relieve
Mr. Hanna of the arduous duties de
volving upon him as chairman and at
the same time give the national com
mittee the benefit of his experience and
marked success in raising campaign
fund*.
VIEWS OF BUSINESS MEN.
Expansion end Ihe I’ropo«e<i Isthmian
Canal Are Favored.
Bai.timohe, Dec. 1.—A few days ago
The Manufacturers'Record asked about
60 of tbo leading business men of tho
south fer their views upon tho resoln-
tions recently passed by the Southern
Cotton Spinners’ rssociation, which
bavo attracted such general attention,
end upon kindred topics. They were
•iked to give their opinions npoh the
following questions:
1. The importance of the construction
of an isthmian canal.
2. ' The need for tho development of
the American merchant marine tbrongli
government aid to afford adequate fa
cilities for onr. increasing commerce
With the world.
3. The demand for a steady expan
sion of onr navy and the control of the
Philippines by the United States as a
strategic point in tho east in connection
with the development of onr trade with
Oriental countries.
It was suggested that these questions,
vitally affecting the bnsinese interests
of the conntry. and especially those of
the sonth, could be discussed from the
pnrely business standpoint as bearing
upon the growth and expansion of the
sou-h's commerce and industry.
This weok’e issue of The Record de
votes six pages to the publication of tbt
letters received. With only two deep
tions. every writer takes a decided stand
In favor of every one of these proposi
tions, snd these two strongly urge the
importance of the canal, but question
the wisdom of government aid to the
merchant marine.
On the other hand, with these two ex-
oeptions, 40 others, who are umong the
foremost leaders in southern upbuild
lug. strongly urge the importance of
subsidies in aid of onr merchant nil
rine, the expansion of onr navy com
mensofate with the position of onr
country in tho world's affairs, the con
trol of the Philippine island, and the
maintenance of the “open door’’ in
China.
