Armored Train Participates,
“Emplacements were thrown up dur
ing the night, the order being to attack
at dawn and the artillery fire to desist
npon prolonged tootiug from the arm

effeotive range. Captain Vernon gave
the signal to cease firing and to ad

that the strength of the fort was greater
than we had supposed. Tho enemy
concentrated such an exceedingly hot
flro that the ndvanco of Captain Vernon
was almost impossible, but with re
markable heroism and gallantry Cap
tains Sandford and'Vornon, Lieutenant
Paton and Seoul Coolie, who guided the
squadrons, and a few mon, actually
reached the sand bags of the fort within
300 yards ot the area of the fort.
“But nothing living could exist there,
since tho ground was swept by Manser
and Martini bnllets. The mon who
oharged through this zone of fire suf
fered terribly, and in following their
officers to capture tbo fort 30 men lost
their lives. Captain Sandford was the
first to tali, and Captain Vernon, aW
ready twice wounded, and Liontonant
Paton wero killed at tha foot of the fort.
These two officers, climbing a ditch
which snrronuded the fort, ibrnst their

only to be shot themselves the next mo
