THE AMERICUS WEEKLY TIME8-REC0RDEK: FRIDAY, JANUARY 19, 1900
BULLER OCCUPIES A
POSITION ON TUGELA
Commences Second Attempt
to Cross the River.
ROBERTS APPROVED PLAN
Mil I III
Twenfy-Srv
London, Jan. 12.—The war office tin*
morning received tho following dis
patch from CJeueral Muller, dated
Springfield, Thursday, Jan. 11, at 9:2Q.
evening:
“I occupied the south bank of the
Togela river at Portgieter's drift this
morning and seized Pont. The river is
in flood. Tho enemy is strongly in
trenched about A\ t miles to the north ”
t Apart from defiuue uews tli^t Gen
tral Buiier has commenced a second at
tempt to cross the Togela river, the
®nly official news this morning is the
list cf casualties among the British offi
cers in the fight at Ladysmith, Satur
day, Jan. 6, showing 13 killed and 21
wounded Among the latter was Lieu
tenant Colonel William Henry D»ck*
Dunnvngbam, V. C., commander of the
Secoud battalion of the Gordon High
landers since 181)7, who has since sue
combed to his wounds. Ho was im
mensely popular everywhere and hi*
death will cause widespread sorrow’.
Tho war office announces that tho
British casualties at Ladysmith J.tn. 0,
among tho rr.uk and file, were 138 killed
and 242 wounded.
General Bugler’s movement obviously
!b of a flanking character, bet whether
it is intended to push the ad vance home
or whether his operations are only a
feint to cover an attack in force on the
Boer position at Hinngw’ana mountain,
remains to be seen.
Bpriugfield, from whence General
Bailor's dispatch was sent, is JC miles
west of Frere. The last news from
Springfield was it was held by the Jo*
hannesbnrg corps under General Vil*
joen and that the Boers had big gang
in position at Portgieter's drift, appa
rently 6 or 8 miles north of Springfield,
and across the big Tugela.
The possession of the drift and Pont
le regarded of great importance. It is
reported here that General Bailor sub
mitted his plan of campaign to Lord
Roberts immediately after the latter
landed and General Roberts sanc
tioned it
4 There la a belief in some quarters
‘that General Hector MacDonald will
icceed Lord Methnen in command of
le British force at Modder River.
There was an unique and interesting
imony at the Guild hall today, when
of the City of London Imperial vol-
iteers received their kits and the free*
of the city. The big crowds in the
>ity cheered the arriving volnuteers,
of whom received a parchment
certificate of the freedom inclosed in a
neat blue case. This portiou of thereg*
itnent will sail for South Africa to*
morrow.

Americus is not the largest city in the world, but it has a furniture store that would
be a credit to a town ten times as large. That store is ours. We don’t say these things
in a boasting spirit, but merely say what everybody knows to be true. We have not
merely the largest and best assortment of FURNITURE and CROCKERY, but our
prices are never a bit higher than they ought to be. There is no question about it—
its the plain truth to say that no dealer in America can give you better satisfaction
than we can. No dealer can sell better than the best.
