IRON FAMINE THREATENED.
Rite In Prices Luoknd For by the
Southern Dn*l«rs.
Birmingham, Ala., Feb. 3.—Because
of the scarcity of coal in England and
the consequent advance there of 10
•hillings per ton in the price of pig
Iron, Alabama iron producers predict an
early rise in southern iron ranging
anywhere from 50 cents to $5 00 per ton
and poflsibly reaching the last named
figure by late spring.
On this account. boginning today,
they are taking uo uiore orders for iron
at present prices, having already on
hand orders sufficient to keep their fur
naces busy fer several mouths, and in
some instances until later in tho sum
mer.
The present supply of southern iron j
in the turuace and warrant yards is the .
smallest known, tuere being less than 1
a week's supply in Alabama und Ten- f
■lessee. j
Fears are entertained by consumers'
of un iron famine, but the fact by May j
•lx ndditional furnaces will have blown j
in, in this state, will probably avert
such a condition.
