THE 4MEKICUS WEEKLY TIMES-REOORDER: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1900.
FATALITY AT RAILROAD HOPS
'Young Man is Killed Instantly By An
Emery Wheel-
A most distressing accident occurred
Friday morning at the Georgia A
Alabama Railway shops, resnlting in
the instant death of Mr. David 1..
ltodgers, a skilled machinist employ
ed there.
The bursting of an emery wheel it
the machine shop ended bin life.
The wheel hurst in three parts, one
of which struck Mr. Rodgers upon the
forehead, completely crushing his
wknll. He was knocked down by force
of the blow, and died after a few gasps
in the presence of three or four horror-
stricken employes standing near the
wheel at the time.
Mr,Rodgera was using the wheel and
probably stood in front of it. None of
tbo other young men present were
injured.
The body was prepared for burial at
the shops and the young wife and two
littlo children, with other lelatives,
were summoned. Hater the remains
were taken to the home of tho deceas
ed on Leo street.
Mr. Rodgers leaves a young wife,
who was Miss Lizzie Furlow, and two
little children. He was an industrious
yonng man, thirty years of age, nnd
esteemed among his fellow-workmen.
As a mark of respect the mechanical
department of the shops were shut
down after the fatal occurence.
SOLD A LARGE LOT OF COTTON.
A Farmer Sold a Lot of 200 Bales
Yesterday.
Therowas one Snmter connty farmer
yesterday who was able to show a roll
of "the needful” amounting to some
thing like §8,000, the proceeds of a sale
of two hundred bales of cotton.
His whole crop was sold yesterday
to a local buyer in a lot.
There was just 200 bales of the fleecy
and it brought the nniform price of 8
cents. It the bales came np the aver
age weight of 500 lbs the sum total paid
the farmer would have been 18,000—
a good price indeed for a cotton crop.
Large lots of cotton^have been sold
here recently at prices ranging from
7} te 8| cents, and farmers are very
well satisfied.
The stocks in Americus are nearly
exhausted, however, as there is less
than a thousand bales in the ware
houses here while there is no more on
the farms to be brought in.
The contract market took a tumble
yesterday and will probably go lower,
doe to heavy port receipts. May and
March each declined abont. 18 points,
March closing at 8.22 and May at 8.27
with the prospect of a still farther de
dine.
T HE ills of women conspire against domestic harmony.
Some derangement of the generative organs is
the main cause of most of the unhappiness in the
household.
The husband can’t understand these troubles. The male
physician only knows of them theoreti
cally and scientifically, and finds it hard
to cure them.
Ilut there is cure for them, certain,
practical and
sympathetic.
Mrs. Pinkham
has been curing
these serious ills of women for
quart- r of a century. Failure t
secur- proper advice should not
excuse the women of to-day, for
the wisest counsel can be had
without charge. Write to Mrs.
Pink .iam for it. Her address
is Lynn, Mass.
Among the multitude of wo
men helped by Mrs. Pinkham
and by Lydia E. Pinkham’s
Vegetable Compound, is Mrs. Joseph
King, Sabina, Ohio. She writes:
"Dear Mrs. Pinkham—Will you
kindly allow me the pleasure of ex
pressing my gratitude for the wonder
ful relief I have experienced by taking
Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Com
pound. I suffered for a long time
with falling of the womb, and those
terrible bearing-down pains, and it
seemed as though iny back would never
stop aching; also had leucorrhcea, dull
headaches, could not sleep, was weak
and life was a burden to me. I doctored
for several years, but it did no good.
My husband wanted me to try your
medicine, and I am so thankful that I
did. I have taken four bottles of the
Compound and a box of Liver Pills, and
can state that if more ladies would only give your medicine a
fair trial they would bless the day they saw your advertise
ment. My heart is full of gratitude to Mrs. Pinkham for what
her medicine has done for me. It is worth its weight in gold.”

STEEL DOOR FOR BANK VAULT.
It Weighs Ten Tons and is a Beauty
Indeed.
Harry Edwards’ story of the Dooly
connty safe was in a manner repeated
here yesterday in the effort to plane in
position the great steel vault door of
the now Planters Bank, by the side of
which the Dooly safe waB a match box
in comparison.
Six or eight mules and an army of
laborers were required yesterday.
After the great steel giant, weighing
nearly nineteen thousand pounds, wbb
hauled from the Central Railroad depot
the task of getting it into the bnilding
was equally difficult, though this will
be accomplished some time today.
It is now on a raised platform in the
street, while a tramway with rollers
will be nsed to slide it into positiop.
The vault was built by the Mosler
Safe and Lock Co, and ie equal to the
finest made. No gang of bnrglars
could drill tbroughjit in a week’s time,
and thus protected tbe money of the
Planters Bank will be absolutely safe.

Makes His Formal Announcement for
Treasurer-
In announcing his candidacy for
state treasurer, Colonel W, A. Brough
ton has issued the following statement
to the people of Georgia:
To the People of Georgia: For some
time I have been seriously considering
the earnest appeals of my friends in all
parts of tbe stato who have insisted on
my consont to enter tbe contest for tbe
office of state treasurer.
“Having been trained to business,
detail and care, I have not been quick
to make a decision in a matter that in
volved bo much responsibility to my
self, aud which was of such grave con
cern to the people of my state. But
recently I have been importuned to
snob a degree by uumerouB telegrams
and letters, thBt to remain silent longer
would be n great injustice to those
frieuds who have been so loyal to my
political ambition.
“For this reason I announce to tbe
people of this state that I am a candi
date for tbe responsible office of treas
urer of the stato of Georgia, subject to
the aotiou of the democratic primary,
and in the event of eleotion. I promise
an honest, correct and faithfnl dis
charge of all the duties pertaining
thereto. I feel that I owe it to the peo
ple to state, in this connection, that
I have, by education and experience,
tbe qualifications that fit one for the
discharge of the duties of so important
a place, and point with pardonable
pride to my sneoess in handling the
vast moneyed interests of 80.000 farm
ers, several years ago, as evidence of
my equipment.
"In the past I have had the honor to
represent my people in the state senate
and my record there indicated a con-
tinned interest in the welfare of the
iarmers of Georgia, an abiding concorn
for the npbnilding of the state mili
tary and a pnrpose to serve Georgia hv
doing everything possible for the ad
vancement of her common schools,
‘ ’With this record I go before my
people and respectfully solicit thoir
sapport. “W. A, Brocoiiton.
NEITHER WERE BADLY INJURED
LEASING OF COUNTY CONVICTS
Sumter Will Get Fair Figures For
Striped Citizens.
Sumter county will receive a very
good price this year for those citizens
who essay to wear tbe stripes running
longitudinally.
Sheriff McArthur camo back yester
day noon from liainbridge, where be
went tho day before to confer with
convict losses relative to tho lease of
oonviots sent to tho camps from Sumter
county.
The best bidder for tbe jailbirds was
J. M. Fleming, of Decatnr connty.
This camp offers for able bodied men
©1 per month; for able bodied women
$1 per month; for boys and cripples
S‘2.50 per month, delivered to the guard
at tbe jail in this city.
It is quite probnblo’that the connty
commission will accept this bid and
send Sumter’s “zebras” there. This
camp has received all the convicts from
Snmter during tbe past year or two,
and tbe service has proved quite satis
factory.
Fight Last Night That Might Have
Resulted Seriously.
Mr. L. S. Tower and Mr. J. A, Dav
enport engaged in an altercation last
night near tbe store of Davenport Drug
Co. with tho result that Mr. Tower re
ceived eoveral blows in tbe face while
Mr. Davenport received a severe stab
in the throat with a small penknife
which, most fortunately, is not likely
to resnlt very seriously.
Tbe difficulty was a mostunfortanate
affair and is deplored by tbe friends
of both participants, who are well
known merchants.
Mr. Davenport, it is said, was talk
ing to his brother, Dr. D. F. Daven
port, in tho latter’s store, and upon
leaving was accosted by Mr. Tower at
the Jackson street entrance regarding
some previous misunderstanding.
Words followed, the lie was passed
and tho two were soon struggling to
gothernpontbe sidewalk near thedoor.
Mr. R. L. McMath and Prof. Lane,
who were near by, separated them.
Mr. Davenport went into the drug
store, where Dr. Miller took several
stitches in the knife wonnd in his
throat. Fortunately the blade did not
strike an artery, and it is not believed
that tbe wound is a very serious one.
Mr. (Tower’s faee was considerably
braised though his injuries are not
severe and will quickly heal.
A warrant charging Mr. Tower with
assault with intent to kill was taken
ont subsequently, and bond assessed
at $500, which he gave. This is tbe
second difficulty occurring between
the two, the first taking plree last year.
MANY DELINQUENTS TO SETTLE.
Great File of Tax Fifas But Slightly
Reduced.
SlieriQ McArthur is after the delin
quent taxpayer, bnt such is tho num
ber of exeentions to be collected that
the great stack on his table still looks
very formidable. Bailiffs in the conn-
try districts are making collections,
while the officers here are busy as well.
Some very prominent people here are
included in the long list of delinquents,
bnt all alike mnst settle with the
sheriff.

We learn from Uon. M. L. Everett

the race for Prison Commissioner.

Mr. Henry Wetteroth, census super
visor for the Third Congressional dis
trict, with headquarters in Americus, is
already receiving applications for posi
tions us census enumerator, although
the arduous task of “counting noses”
hero will not begin until June. The
work w ill consume about a month, aud
will Ic no picnic for those who expect
to engage in if.
It will tako a pretty smart man to
secure and hold the job.
The blank forms which each aspirant
for a job with Uncle Sam must till ont
correctly make quite a severe test, and
only those who have had at least a com
mon school education can hope to per
form the task.
Each applicant is furnished with
sample schedule, showing how the
census is to be taken, a blank schedule
to bo tilled in, and a narrative con
taining a printed account of the sup
posed work of a census enumerator in
a particular township, tbe people whom
be finds in bis district and the inform
ation he gathers about them
The applicant is expected to take this
uarrativo and classify and fill in the
names of the people given there on his
blank schedule.
In returning his test schedule tbe
applicant must certify that he has had
no assistance in his work aud that the
entries havo been made in bis own
bandwriting. Should he be sufficient
ly lncky, or UDlncky, to get an appoint
ment, tbe enumerator will find that be
has no snap.
In making np bis schedules be mnBt
get, in the order named, tbe name of
tbe street, tbe house number, the Dum
ber of the dwelling honse, tbe number
of each family in the order of visitation,
tbe name of each member of the family,
and of each occupant of the honse and
relationship of each to the head of tbe
family, their color, sex, date of birth,
age and last birthday.
He will ascertain whether they are
single, married, widowed or divorced,
number of years married, if a mother
bow many children, and bow many
living, the place of birth of each per
son and places or conntries of birth of
fatber and mother of each, their citi
zenship, if foreign born the year of
immigration to tbo United States,
number of years in the United States
and whether naturalized or alien.
He will find out theoccnpatioD, trade
or profession of each person 10 years
of ago and over, and number of months
unemployed during the year.
On tho score of education he mnst
ascertain from each person whether he
or sho can read, write and speak Eng
lish, and of children how many months
during the year they have attended
school. He must also ascertain wlieth
er tbe house in which the head of tbo
family lives is owned or rented and
if owned whether it ib mortgaged.
This is abont all theenumerator iscx
pected to find out about tbe people of
bis district. There is a long list of in
structions, however. Slovenly work
will be refused and will either have to
be done over again or somebody else
will do it for him and he will be miuns
his pny.

In Changing the Telephone System In
Americus.
Resides the vast improvement to be
made in its service here the Southern
Bell Telephone Co. will expend a good

several weeks. The estimate is abont
$1,000, besides tbegreat cost of materi
al and supplies, and tbe larger portion
of this will be expended by. the work

changes in the system, as told by the
Times-Recorder two weeks ago, will

When the Sttv Philippine Coimnlft-

Governor Will lie Detached uud
Ordered Back to ITuItod States.
Washington, Feb. 8.— Major Gen
eral Elwell S. Otis will bo detached
from duty as governor general of the
Philippines and commander of the de
partment of tbe Pacific immediately
after the arrival of the new Philippines
commission and will be ordered to re
turn to tbe United States.
This action will be in compliance with
the wishes of Genoral Otis, who has in.
formed tbe war department that be is in
need of a reepite. Tbe president be
lieves General Otie can be relieved after
tbe arrival of tbo commission et Ma
nila—which will occur late in April or
early in May—without detriment to the
interesta of the government. He will
be succeeded by the senior officer in the
lslande, probably Major Ganeral Artbnr
McArthur, who will ba subordinate to
tbe now commission, wbich will possess
plenary powers and will be responsible
to tbe war department.
Granting of aucb extensive authority
to tbe new commission and its assign
ment to duty under tbe war department
marks important departures in the pol
icy of the administration. Members of
tbe Scbnrman commission have com
plained that they were handicapped in
tbeir work by tbe necessity of subordi
nating their action io tbe military. The
decision to place tbe Taft commission
under tbe war department means that
the archipelago is now considered do
mestic territory.
After tbe suppression of organized
resistance on tbe part of the natives,
the archipelago will be divided iutofonr

Judge Taft, as chairman of tho com
mission, will remain in Manila, the su
preme bead of tbe archipelago and will
be to all intents and pnrpoeee tbe gov
