Richland, Ga., states that on Sa'nrday
night abont 8 oYlot k tho guard hoiine,
or calaboose, was discovered to bo on
fire. Late in the afternoon a vagrant
ncgrojby tho name of John Goar bad
been incarcerated for druukeness, and
before'the ofllcers]could reach the place
the building was too far gonejtorelease
tbo unfortunateluogro.iSomo one made
an attempt to do so by knocking down
tbo doo-, but a volume of smoko and
flame burst out that made it impossible
for anyone to outer. By this time, in
all probability, °tho negro was] dead.
His charred remains were found after
tbo fire subsided. He had threatened
to burn Ihe building if he was ever put
in there again, and it is presumed that
he was tho incendiary.

A Pioneer Citizen Returns After Long
Absence.
Mr. J. W. Wheatley has as his guest
this week Judge Robert McCoy, of
Baltimore, one of the pioneer oitizens
of Americus. Judge MeCoy came here
in 1843, when this metropolis was but
a straggling village and the whoop of
the red man and growl of tho grizzly
awoko the echoes in tho primeval for-
osta round about. He bad a little store
on the stago road, near whore tha oily
ball now stands, and Mr. Wheatley
clerked for him. Jndge MeCoy ia now
78 years of ago, bnt ia hale and hearty
and tells many intereeting anecdotes
of pioneer days in Americas.
