OCCUPY GOOD POSITIONS
Kederals In Strong Force Ready to Re-
•1st British Advance--floors Appeur
In Large Number Near Corona—Lord
Roberts* Report.
London, May 13.—Lord Roberts Is
now face to face with the Boer position
at Kroonstadt and despite reports of its
strength the result of the mt'etiiigof the
opposing forces is expected to bo very’
similar to the outcome following the
British advance on Brandfort and the
Zaaml river. Lord Roberts is apparently
keeping the federals moving, so as to not
give them time for effective occupation
of any {Misition near him, and thongli
numerous kopjes in the neighborhood of
Krtxmstadt afford strong )M>sitious from
which a delaying action may bo found,
It is anticipated by the best experts here
that the Boors will now hurry on to the
Vual, where thev will once more at
tempt to stem the passage of the in
vading army, while the bulk of the fed
eral# prepare for what will perhaps bo a
decisive battle on the ridge ruuuiiig east
and west, southward of Johannesburg,
which open from the sound to the south
ward offers the defenders splendid ad
vantages over any attacking force.
Lord Roberts* Report.
London, May 13.—Lord Roberts tele-
graghs to the war office from Geneva
Siding as follows:
“My headquarters with Pole Carow’s
division inarched 30 miles yesterday and
are now at Geneva Siding, 14 miles from
Kroonstadt and alxmt 0 miles from
Boshrand, where the Boers are holding
entrenched positions. Gordon’s brigade
is in touch with them, Tucker’s division
is a short distance southeast and Hamil
ton’s force is still further east. Broad-
wood’s brigade overtook a part of the
enemy’s convoy at Potgieter’s laager,
southeast of Yeiitersburgand captured
several wagons and some prisoners.
“\YV have taken nearly 100 prisoners
during the last two days. All the Free
Staters who could give a good account
of themselves have been disarmed and
allowed to return to their farms.”
j AFTER THE GREAT FIGHT.
W hut the Sports Say of the Jeffries*
Corbett Contest.
Nkw York, May 13.—James J. Jeff
ries, who defeated former Cliampiou
Corliett at the Seaside Sporting dub last
night, has several reminders of the hard
est buttle of his life, while Corbett shows
little signs of his defeat.
Jeffries’ friends are well pleased with
the result, but admit that they were
badly scared for a while, as Corbett
showed all his old-time skill and had the
world’s champion in distress on several
occasions. They also admit that it was
only through his superior strength that
he defeated Corbett.
Corbett’s friends, while they are some
what disappointed at the result, are well
pi used with his showing. They point
to the fact that lie inflicted more pun
ishment than he received, as he had all
th-- I lest of the light up to the fatal
twenty-third.
They claim that while l\e lost Corbett
gave Jeffries the greatest tight of his
life. He proved himself the champion’s
sujierior in science and generalship but
lacked force to his blows.
The twenty-third round is still the
subject of discussion, when, after a
couple of passes, Jeffries swung his right
to Corbett's jaw and rushed him across
the ring t% the ropes to a neutral corner.
At close quarters Corbett hooked left
twice t«» the face, sending the blood
spurting again from Jeffries' face. Jef
fries threw two hard lofts into the body
and smashed his left again on Corbett's
face sending Corbett’s head Iwick. Then
Jeffries crowded him to the rope.*^
and with a full swing left smash
on the jaw scut Corbett rolling down
and out.
Time of round, 3:11.

SCARCITY OF COTTON SEED.
Famine Prevails In Mississippi Valley.
Short Crop Possible. j
Memphis, May 13.—This has been a
peculiar season for tbe farmers and
planters throughout the Mississippi val
ley and particularly in those sections In
which cotton is the staplo product. On
account of the late rains it was feared
for a time that it would not be possiblo
to got in a big crop. This fear bos dis-
appeared, however.
The only worry which the planters
arc considering is that they won’t be
ublo to get all tho seed they neod.
last fall the demand fhr cottonseed -
oil mills was so strong for the product
and prices were so good that a very few
planters had enaugh seed over to furn
ish nil needed for planting. In soma
sections the price of seed went np 300
Iter cent and in many instances the seed .
which had been held over for tho
spring planting wore sold. If the first
f minting had been successful it is not be
loved there would have been anything
upprutching a scarcity of seed, but when
many fields, whicli lind been planted
were almost swept away by the floods,
arrangements hud to he made for other
