tions hud been made to an aggregate
amount of fill,5H1. Increase in the
churches was nearly 10 per cent and in
the aggregate appropriations nearly 45
per rent.

“There are indications that the prob

is taking a deeper hold upon the minds
of thoughtful men, l>oth north and south.
Industrial schools seem to have come
more prominently to the front of late
and to have caught the pubhc favor, so
much so that at times there seems to be
a danger of shoving other schools of
training aud other lines of development
aside as foreign to the problem.*’

Thirty-Ninth Annual Session of <icu-
Vrul Assembly Convenes.
Atianta, May 17.—The thirty-ninth
annual session of the general assembly
of tho southern Presbyterian church is
in session in this city. There are about
200 commissioners in attendance repre
senting 78 presbyteries, the representa
tion being i*quullv divided among the
clergy und laymen.
The opening sermon was preached by
tho retiring moderator, Rev. ,J. F. Can
non of St. Louis.
At 8 o’clcjck in the evening a reception
v was given the members of the general
assembly. Several short addresses were
'delivered and refreshments served.
Several important matters will oomo
up for discussion such as Christum edu
cation, tho veto power of tho general
assembly, the compilation of another
hymn lsiok, the duties of the office of
the elder of negro evangelization and
others. From present indications there
will bo no effort made to revise the creed
of the church.
NEGROES AND WHITES FIGHT
A Pitched Hattie In North Carolina.
About 20 Wounded.
Raleigh, May 17.—A mob of drunken
negro railroad hands and lumber cutters
went to the little village of Four Oaks,
swearing to kill every whito man it.
The crowd commenced to curse and raise
a disturbance. The town }h>1 ice mail at
tempted to arrest a negro tor disorderly
conduct, whereupon the negroes .at
tacked the ]M>lieeitiiiii and heat him al
most insensible. S.une white men at
tempted to aid the policeman, but were
knocked down or shot at.
A general tight ensued, the white peo
ple opening lire on the negroes. Sev
eral negroes were wounded, but not fa
tally.
About 20 |H*ople were wounded in the
general shooting which followed the at
tach upon the officer, some of them se
riously.
way Marriage Causes Serious
plications—Several In Trouble.
Raleigh, May ID.—A sensation re
sults from the marriage at Hillsboro of
Miss Caroline Situs, a student at tho
Baptist Female university here, and
daughter of a minister of Macon county,
and John Birdsong, a jxist graduate stu
dent at the State Agricultural and Mi«
chanieul college. Tho university stu*
dents went to Hillsboro on a picnic.
Birdsong and Miss Sims, who had made
plans, went to a hotel, where a magis
trate married them. One of Birdsong’s
fellow students obtained the license from
tho register of deeds. The bride was
upon discovery immediately taken in
charge by the university facnljty, brought
here and confined to her room. Some
trustees will advise her father to take
her homo for two years and tell Bird
song if lie is then in a jx»iti<ui to marry
and she is willing he can have her, hut
warning him against any other course.
Attorneys have looked into the mat
ter and say tho marriage is valid as the
code says males over 18 and females over
14 can marry. The register of deeds
who issued lhe license is in trouble and
will be sued. The law says in case the
girl is at school no marriage license shall
l>o issued save qjioii written consent of
the person who placed her there. The
groom will sue for jiossessiou of Ids wife
And will secure her.

among the local millers has broken out
and the price of flour in theloail market
has declined 50 cents mi the barrel. One
mill cut the price go cents and another

met the cut with 50
It seems that the local millers have
had a combination for several years and
have kept the price of flour up to $3.90
per barrel. They seem to have had a
row among themselves and the war has
begun in earnest. Grocers having a
large stock on hand are not feeling
kindly toward the ml net ion.

is a big item of expense. It is better to take your time about it and look around for
the best store. It is better to spend a little time in making selections than to spend
a long time in regret after you buy. My proposition is to serve you better than any
body else, both as to quality and price. That is the basis on which I ask your trade.
May I have it ? Give.me a chance and will prove it.
