Keeping Order Among the Turbnlent
Negroes.
News received late last night frtfm
Andersonville was to the effect that
many arrests were made by Sheriff
McArthnr, Deputy Bell and the mili
tary.
These arrests were for fighting and
gambling, all the parties thereto being
negroes.
When the Light Infantry returned
here last night the soldiers bad eleven
negro prisoners tied and under guard.
These were placed in jail at once and
warrants issued for them.
Two dead negroes were fonndjin the
woods, evidently having been killed
by companions while gambling.
A negro known se the Georgia Snake,
a desperate criminal, was captured by
tbe soldiers and brought to Americas
last night. He has been here before
and is a desperado.
Tbe sheriffs and soldiers were kept
busy all day qnelling riots and making
arrests.
Daring the afternoon three bucks
tried lo prepare each other for burial,
but were promptly arrested. Tbe
presence of the military had the effect
of making the nnrnly ones walk a
chalk mark all day.

MYSTERY IN MITCHELL’S DEATH
Found Badly Wounded Bat Refused
to Explain.
Dan Mitchell, an AmericuB negro,
died yesterday morning from wounds
inflicted the night previous, where and
by whom no one knows, as Mitchell re
fused positively to tell bis relatives
who, if any one, had strnck him.
The woand was a bad one in the
back of the negro's head.
It crushed the s’knll, bat despite this
fact Mitchell lived nearly a day and
talked to those about bis bedside.
The negro worked on the section
gang here, and when found was lying
on a qnilt by the side of tbe railroad
track. Ho bad gone away the night
before, carrying his effects, and had
spread out his qnilt to lie jpvn.
It was very evident that Mitchell was
not hurt by a train.
Those who knew him host believe
that he was killed by negro gamblers
at Andersonville, tbe vanguard of tho
gang there yesterday; that he tried to
walk homo and, failing, had laid down
beside tbe railroad track.
Had he been strnck by a train there
wonld have been evidences of a strug
gle beside the track, bat there was
none of this. The body was shipped
to Green’s mill for bnrial.

and yesterday, though the census
enumerators will not find tbe people
there when noses are counted on
tomorrow.
It was the annua! exodus of visitors,
principally negroes, who go therein
vast numbers on Decoration day,
though taking no part in the exercises.
It is a picnic frolic for the dark contin
gent, who come from every town with
in a radius of a hundred miles to dance
in the woods near the village.
And there was no exception yester
day to the established rale of years.
At an early hour the vicinity of the
Central Railroad depot here was a
study in black, while trains were kept
moving all day to carry the revelers to
Andersonville in large detachments.
The Light Infantry, nnder command
of Captain W. F. Clarke, forty-eight
strong, went with the first tram, the
men presenting a fine appearance as
they marched to the depot. The pres
ence of the military had much to do
with the preservation of order about
that little town yesterday.
A company of regulars were on duty
inside tbe national cemetery.
The first excursion train reached
Americns from Colnmbns and was
rushed through to Andersonville.
This was followed by specials from
Enfanls, Dothan and Fitzgerald.
Each train brought a dozen coaches,
packed to the doors.
After these trains discharged their
cargoes in Andersonville they were
switched back and forth all day, car
rying and bringing the crowds here.
Thousands of Americns negroes went,
as usual, and it was after 10 o’clock
last night ere tne last train came from
Andersonville.
. Fully ten thousand visitors crowded
the little town and cemetery yesterday.
