ROBERTS MYSTIFIES
THE LONDON CRITICS

Jleilborn Aft<*r Severe KJgliting.
London*, June 2.—Lord Huberts’last
report of the movement of the British
troops in the Transvaal is somewhat
£ mysterious. From the fact that Gen
eral French’s report took two days to
reach the coinmander-in-chief at Johan *
nesburg, it is believed that either French
must be many miles north of that city
or that he is having trouble with his
communications. The former is gen
erally accepted as the most probable,
and it is surmised that Lord Roberts’
statement that French “is now holding
the place that I directed him to do north
of Johannesburg,” means that Lis posi
tion is quite close to Pretoria. The ad
ditional fact that Lord Roberts’ disi>atch
published today is dated four hours
earlier than the one given out yesterday,
and that it takes the proceedings no fur
ther than May 31, leads to the conclii-
liou thut some iniport&ut movement is ‘
on foot or that Lord Roberts himself has
not been ablo to keep his lines clear be-
; hind him. Possibly the next place Lord
Roberts will be heard from will be Pre
toria.
It seems that French should certainfy |
lie within striking distunce of the Trans
vaal capital today.
General Rundle ap[H*ars to have re
turned to Seuekal after lighting east
ward and contemplates an early for
ward movement. Boor prisoners say
that 50 men were killed and many
wounded in the recent fight.
The Cologne Gazette publishes a letter
from State Secretary Reitz, dated April
25, saying:
“The British government has prom
ised the British nation that the cost of
the war will be dafraved by the Boers.
But as the latter will not bo in a jiosi-
tion to pay, Great Britain must obtain,
the money from the gold mines, which
will thereby bo mulcted of the net prof
its, whereas the Transva al never levied
a special tfix on gold. The instigators
of the war, Rhodes, Wernlicr, Beit and
others will suffer most. In addition, the
British will have to maintain a garrison
50j00Q men, the cost of which the
mines will also have to pay. As soon as
the British troops are withdrawn wars
and rebellions will break out, not for
years, but for centuries. For England
this means a constant source of troublo,
annoyance and bloodshed.”
BOERS OCCUPY THE HILLS.
They Hold All Points of Vantage
Around Pretoria.
Lorknzo Marquez, Juno 2.—Presi
dent Kruger is still at, Macpdadorp. about
half way between Pretoria and the Por
tuguese frontier on the railroad between
tibio Transvaal capital and Delagoa bay.
Boer commands totalling about 10,000
men held, Thursday, all the positions
and hills around Pretoria. Another
large command was at Broilkhurst
spruit, about 40 miles from Pretoria, on
*4ne railroad leading to Delagoa bay.
Telegraphic communieatious with tho
Transvaal is closed to the public.' Fe
verish excitement prevails here, owing
to the 'most total abseucoof news from
either sjtle.
The object of Fritchio Eloflf, President
Kruger’s son-ii^-law, and Herman, his
physician, appears to have been to placo
a large amount of gold iu safety.
. Freucli Meets Strong Opposition.
London, ' June 2.—Lord Roberts re
ports to tile secretary of state as follows
from Johanuesburg: “French’s report of
his operations during May 28 and 29 has
leached me. He was opposed through-
• put Ms march, but managed to drive off
, ihe enemy from the strong jiositious
they successfully held with little loss
and is now holding the place which I
directed hiui to do north of Johannes
burg.” * J
