at tbe fresk. The woman atrided
along the middle of the street, and
walked several blocks before she was
overhauled and captnred. She was a
demented creature, given the liberty
of the jail corridor dating a recent ill

A Large Vote Was Foiled in Sumter
Yesterday.
INTEBEST AT A GBEAT TENSION
Eesult Will Not ba Known Until Vote
is Consolidated Today.—Not Near
the Fall Begistered Vote waa Pol
led
The long drawn ont campaign for
connty officers ended yesterday with
the battle of ballots at the polls, when
tbe voters of Snmter expressed their
choice among the thirty-three candi
dates who waoted to serve them—an
average of three for eaeh of the offices
to be filled.
And it was a hot fight, though waged
in all fairness tbrongbont.
Of tbe 1,604 registered voters per
haps 1,300 came to tbe polls. The fall
vote and exaot result will hardly be
known nntil tbe ballots are consoli
dated this morning.
A good vote was polled at the court
house or city precinct—831—many
farmers coming here to vote. This,
of coarse, reduced the number at the
severs, precincts to some extent,
though the total vote at each, when
tbe retnrns are consolidated today,
will be snrprising.
At this boar (10 a. m.) the consolida
tion is not complete, though the resnlt
is praotioally'conceded.
E. L. Bell is eleeted sheriff; T. M.
Allen, ordinary; J. H. Allen, clerk
coart; J. E.Snllivan, treasnrer; J. B.
Dunn, tax collector; J. P. Baiford,
tax receiver; U. S. Loekett, coroner.
The only changes made were in the
offices of ordinary and coroner.
The race for clerk between Allen and
Chambliss waa exceedingly close, Al
len’s plurality in the whole oonnty be
ing only 43 votes.

here since 1868, making a period of thirty-two years our
piesent firm and its predecessor haveteen araongyou. With
out boasting you will readily recognize that the immense
business we have bniit up could not have been, established
except by high toned, honorable business dealings.
We are going to celebrate out tenth anniversary of the
present firm by inaugurating the most attractive cut price
June sale we have ever had in our history. Of course you
will readily understand that there are a great many articles
on which there is a fixed contract price and wbtcb can not be
changed, bnt as a rule the knife will be applied to most ol
our stock, as we want to make this month’s sale eclipse any
June we have ever had.
Oar stock was never so full and complete, and there is
hardly anything you may wish but what you can find it
under our roof, and In enormous variety. We urge you to

Little Advance i* Made in Contracts
Yesterday.
There was bnt slight change in the
cotton contract market yesterday
though tbe near months, with tho ex
ception of August, evidenced consid
erable strength. Angust, the favorite
month, opened at' 8 cents even, drop
ped a few points below, then rallied
and dosed steady at 8.12—a net gain
of a dozen points. There waa hardly
an interesting feature and not mnch
attention, locally, was given the cotton
market.

These Occasions are Crowding the
Season Now.
The average pjenio chaser will be in
a dilemma tomorrow as to where he
will go to feast and make merry, tbe
nnmber of picnioa dated here being
calculated to confuse him. Besides a
picnio at Myrtle^there is the Presby
terian Sunday School picnio at Holy
Springs and both will draw largely
from the ranks of the anted. Many
with a robust appetite will go with tho
Baptist Sunday schools to Bowen's
Mill, and a great occasion is promised
there; Then onr gaeats, the Ogle
thorpe Sunday schools, are coming
here to picnio at Magnolia Dell today,
and altogether the season will be one of
picnics and feasting galore.
