The Chinese situa-
in-ofoimdcst alarm
(1 that the Boxer
digntod iu Russia’siu-
inay reap the long cle-
in China before the
j relieves Great
Britain of lier South African trouble.
Iu this predicament the British press
and politicians are looking anxiously to
President McKinley to interpo.se some
effectual check to the fruition of Rus
sia’s alleged design.
The Britisli army is so locked up iu
South Africa that there is no reasonable
prospect of being able to safely with
draw any part of it for at least two
months.
The British army in India is already
11,000 below the lowest reach of the es
tablishment and it seems certain that
another expedition of 15,000 men will he
necessary to restore British authorities
in Ashanti. Therefore England is in a
aore plight as far as concerns any ef
fectual defense of her interests in the
far east.
It is known in diplomatic circles that
Lord Salisbury is using every effort to
obtain an advantage with Russia, but
while Russia negotiates with China slio
will gain advantage.
It is recognized that if Russia gets a
foothold in China under n plea of pre
serving order she will never withdraw.
The British occupation of Egypt has set
a precedent which will just suit Russia's
purposes.
Communications liavo been actively
passing during the week between Am
bassador Choato and Lord Salisbury. It
is understood that while the British
prime minister is seeking an agreement
with Russia, he is working at the same
time for joint action with the United
States as tho second string to his bow.
Such action would certainly be ac
cepted here as demonstrating that an
Anglo-American alliance is morally, if
not formally, accomplished.
No Matter How Small the Price are
In My Store, the Quality is Right!
'■pHERE isn’t a single solitary
piece of furniture in the
place of which I am ashamed.
Nothing can go out or my doors unless satisfaction gees with it, If I can’t please my
patrons in every way, I prefer not sell at all. Buying
is a big item of expense. It is better to take your time about it and look around for
the. best store. It is better to spend a little time in making selections than to spend
a long time in regret after you buy. My proposition is to serve you better than any
body else, both’as to quality and price. That is the basis on which I ask your trade.
May I have it ? Give.me a chance and will prove it.
