presidency. After thinking this propo
sition over several weeks I consented
and accordingly announced that if the
pepple wanted mo to serve iu that ca
pacity I would gladly do so.
“But I thank God they do not appear
to want me.”
« Admiral Dewey is entirely familiar ,
With the situation in Chiua when asked :
♦he direct question: '
“Wlmt is likely to Ik* tho outcome of
the present complications in China?”
the admiral shook his head as if uncer
tain about venturing an opinion.
“I can onjy see ono outcome as a re
gal*. of the conflict now iu progress iu
Qbina. and that is the adoption of the
American policy in favor of oi>en ports |
for American commerce on equal terms ■
with all tho other comniL#jial nations of :
the world. I
“It mqst come to that eventually, and 1
ft is fortunate that we are in a position ,
to say to the nations of Europo ‘wo are
in this deal, gentlemen.’
-‘This would not have been possible,”
Continued the admiral, “had it not been
for the result of the Spanish war. It
seems that God is with us in making it
isiblo to have at the moment tho
jest army of men and tho most for-
ible fleet of ships right on the spot
enforce onr rights and see that Amer
ican interests are protected. Not only
l)Qve wo an army of 50,000 trained sol
diers at the very gate of the Orient, but
we are tho 6uly nation that has gunboats
on the Yang Tso Kiang river. It looks
' Uke a special dispensation of providence
for ns to have two of our gunboats which
ore capable of navigating tho waters on
the spot undegoing minoY repairs.
“pur commerce is increasing in China
wonderfully all the time and now that
we have the Philippines we are right at
the door of this rich fluid of commerce.”
“Then you certainly believonn our re
tention of the Philippines?” the admiral
was asked.
“Most assuredly I do,” was the reply.
“Had it not been for our acquisition of
those islands it would not have been
possible to have the fighting force in
those waters today, and we would havo
been ignored in tho deliberations now
daily held by the representatives of tho
t nations of Europe relative to
inn, tho same as Wo were of tho
■mailer cause of South America.”

Murdt^ Lpnvcs Greenville.
Greenville, S. O., Juno 15.—Mrs.
Hattie Hughes, tho woman who mado
herself a widow by shooting her hus
band, has skipp'd. Since her first trial
for murder over a yeaj* ago Mrs. Hughes
has been running a restaurant on Main
street and it has severul times been
* charged that she was selling whisky
contrary to law. Iu fact, several cases
for keeping a blind tiger are now pend
ing against her, in which she has given
bond. Her bond in the murder case is
II ,000 only. The case has resulted in
three mistrials and ever since tho first
trial Mrs. Hughes lias been out on bail.
Financial dillicultjes are tho cause of
her departure. The sheriff foreclosed a
mortgage on her stock, but when he
went to the restaurant he found the
door locked and the proprietress gone.
Mrs. Hughes shot and killed her hus
band at Greers in November, 1808. Her
face and figure, attractive manner and
, • calmness during her trouble caused her
to be the sensation of the'day.
