country if salt is the only article re
qnired to do it, having just bought and
sold a vast quantity of that material.
If fact, his purchase will require ten
trains to haul it here.
The purchase consists of 25.000 sacks
of salt, each weighing 100 pounds, the
total weight being two million, five
hundred thousand pounds, enough to
supply all of southwestern Georgia.
And practically the-last bag of this
immense shipment was sold yesterday
for fature delivery.
The entire territory of the Whitley
Grocery Co. was thus covered.
The company bought this salt six
months ago ero the salt combine or
trust, was formed, and is thereby in
position to sell at very close prices and
at the same timo make a small profit.
But at any event Whitley “saved the
country’’as n salty proposition.

Several Here Will Spend Summer in
The Mountains.
Quite a number of Americus people
will leave this week for Linville, a
little hamlet delightfully situated high
up,in the mountains of North Carolina,
and soon there will be quite a small
colony representing Americus there,
Mr. C. M. Wheatley, Miss Wheatley
aud .Mr. aud Mrs. George W. Bacot
have taken a cottage there for the
summer, Mr. aud Mrs. Bacot going up
tomorrow morning. Mrs. C. A. Hun
tington, Mrs. Crawford Wheatley, Miss
Cobb, Mrs. Lanier, Miss Hollis, Judge
and Mrs. Charles Crisp aro among
those who will go later, though the
Americus party will number a full
score in the end. Linville is describ
ed as an ideal mountain resort, several
Americas people having spent last
season there.
varieties of peaebes, are waiting the
,cjming of the Elbertas. Owing to un-
propitious weather the crop of Elber
tas will be late. Mr. T. B. Hooks,
one of the largest peach growers here,
thinks the crop will be from a week to
ten days late. Mr. Hooks does not
think tho peaches bavo been hurt by
rain thus far, chough in other localities
there is much dread of black rot.
Tnia is a disease of the peach that,
when it once gains a foothold in an
orchard, spreads rapidly to all the
trees and is frequently accompanied by
disastrous consequences. The black
rot, when once fairly started, can work
more destruction in an orchard than
almost any other of the numerous pests
aud diseases with which the growers
hnve to conteud.

Fire Loss in Americus This Year Is
Less Than S500.
Tbs record made by the Americas
fire department this year iB indeed ex
cellent, and again evidences its effi
ciency. Daring tho past six months,
or since January 1st the department
has responded to twenty-three alarms
of fire, only one of which proved false.
Only one house was destroyed, and
that was a little wooden shanty near
the Central railroad, Chief Smith
says the aggregate losies by fire
this year, so far, does not ex
ceed 3500, a remarkable record indeed,
Tho losses by tho twenty-two fires
ranged from 33 up, the greatest loss
being that of a negro bouso on Forrest
street where the damage amounted to
probably §50. What other city of
8,000 population can show a fire loss of
less than 3500 in six months?
