HEAVY WORK IS COMPLETED.
Pennsylvania’s Crew Shows Up t<i
Good Advantage.
Poughkeepsie, N. Y., June 28.— The
hard practices of all the crow except
Pennsylvania are over and the coaches
for the next few days will give the men
just enough of short work to keep them
in form.
In the case of two of the five varsity
crews present the easy training is abso
lutely necessary, for the Wisconsin eight
and Cornell eight are as close to what
the coaches term fineness as it is safe to
have them.
Looking over the three crews of Penn
sylvania one is struck at once with their
sturdiness and healthy appearance, none
of the other crews looking quite so well.
C flumbia conics next in appearance and
Georgetown and the Cornell senior
eights next. Wisconsin’s freshmen make
a good showing and are the favorites in
the freshmen class, but their varsity
crew looks whitened out and not in as
good condition as when they made such
a splendid showing last year. George
town is a good deal of a puzzle to the
experts here.

press has assented its disbelief in the al

of the legation were safe with Admiral

mentioned anything about the members
of the legation being with the British

The treatment of thousands of wound-
cd and fever stricken British soldiers in
tho field threatens to become as seriotU
a matter for public agitation as tin: mill
tary camps wero after the Spanish-
American war. If Lord Roberts wal
not so frankly willing to shoulder tbs
major part of the responsibility the out’
cry which Burdette-Coutta’ lettcrl
raised would well nigh have swnmped
the government. But few people care
to seriously criticise tho successful gen
eral wltose consideration for his men,
especially the wounded, is a by-word in
the army aud elsewhere.
Tho action of Lord Lansdowue, socro-
rotary of stato for war, in submitting
the criticism of Lord Roberts himself
was a master stroke of politics whioh
temporarily saved tho government's
head. However, if the proposed parlia
mentary committee finds the war offios
failed to adopt necessary medical pre
cautions it will take the Conservatives a
loug time to re-establish their prestige
with thousands ia Great Britain who
have suffered bitterly through the loss
and illness of relatives iu South Africa.
It has keen hard enough for those bo
reaved to ‘‘grin and bear” the long cas
ualty lists, but, with the suspicion that

longer uuy restraint to their sorrow or
limit to tlieir indignation.
A significant sign of the time is tho
announcement that some of tho most
distinguished men, regardless of party,
have agreed to join an association with
the object of fixing steadily public at
teutiou on the lessons of tho war, fore
most among which is the necessity for
examining tho defenses of tho cinpirt
anil the need of conduct of tho vurioul
