in the meanwhile the general public

it can from the fact that the machinery
is used otherwise every day, the peo

OBSERVE THE GREAT HOLIDAY.
Amerieus is Going to Celebrate tho
Big Day.
This is the glorions Fonrth, the
birthday of the nation and the cannon
cracker, and while Americns has no
crackers to pop the native, crackers
are going to enjoy the day.
For the Fonrth of July comes round
but once a year.
Business will bo suspended very
generally, and every body will be out

Its Hawaii has of doing things.
And in respect to this jolly old cuss
Americns will rejoice and help to make
the national birthday a howling sue-
cess. Go to the picnics today, meet
your friends there and celebrate the

It is tho only Fonrth of Jnly due this
year, and one cannot miss it.
ASSEMBLE IN ATLANTA TODAY.
The Hosts of Hanna Will Discuss the
Situation.
Postmaster Smith, of Americns, goes
to Atlanta today to attend tomorrow a
meeting of the Republican state cen
tral committee. Mr. Smith does not
believe the party will put ont a state
ticket, the object of the meeting being
to Belect presidential electors chiefly.
Mr. Henry Wotteroth, of Americas,
was first selected as a delegate from
this Congressional district, bnt as he
already holds a commission nnder the
government, that of census enamera
tor, he is thns barred from acting as
delegate. Tne choice of the district,
Mr. Smith says, is Mr. Walter B. Sey
mour. a wealthy and highly respected
citizen of Cordele, who will probably
cast the vote of the Third district for
McKinley.
suburbs.
The depleted condition of the city
treasury, the fact that Mr. Pantone
resided in a vory sparsely settled lo.
cali'y, and the further fact that several
other similar requests for lights in
other parts of town had been refused
or held up, resulted in an udverso com
mittes report
The factional fight opened np in
dead earnest.
Messrs. Gnerry, Bolton, Oliver and
Watts championed Pantone’s cause,
while Mayor Hixon and Aldermen
Mitchell and Sherlock opposed the
p'ncing of a light at his home unless
one conld be removed there from an
other locality.
Red hot debates followed and inter
cst rose to fever heat. In the spirited
coloquy Alderman Sherlock suggested
the idea that politics prompted the
movement in favor of Mr. Pantone,
whom some of the members probably
thought was a political power among
voters at the shops.
This statement brought a spirited
denial from Alderman Oliver.
At this juncture it looked as though
serious tronble might resnit, bnt this
was happily nverted. In the end the
majority voted Mr. Pantone the covet
ed light, bnt ns a week may elapse be
fore it is pat np the other side may
ally their forces for another fight,
