Old Honda Involve South Carolina In
Law Suit.
Columbia, July 11.—The brief of tho
United States ngainst the stato has been
received by Attorney General Bellinger.
When the suit was first announced tho
state officials did not exactly understand
what it was all about, hut the brief ex
plains it.
It seems that in JS50 the state issued
bonds for the completion of tho state-
house and by some means $150,000 of
them came into tho possession of tho
federal government, and suit is now
made demanding tho full face value of
tiie bonds with interest since 1850. Tho
total amount sued for will be about
$250,000.

Sax Francisco, Jaly 11.—Martial law
was proclaimed at Nome City by Gen
eral Randall, in charge of tho United
States troops in that district, because of
the jumping of mining claims aud other
acts of lawlessness.
The St. Paul from St. Michaels re
ports a great many cases of smallpox
and typhoid feve. at Nomo.
Tho St. Paul brought 64 passengers
and $1,500,000 in gold dust, tho bulk of
which was consigned to tho Alaska
Commercial company. Of this amount
about $150,000 was from the Capo Nomo
district.
Among the passengers on the St. Paul
there was distributed about $200,000 in
gold dust. The largest individual hold
ers wore J. S. Langford and Peter John
son, who brought about $30,000 each
from the Rampart district.

Charlotte, N. C., July 11.—Articles
of incorporation have been filed by tho

hours from Nagasaki aud proceeded to
Taku.
The Logan, bearing tho Ninth regi
ment of United States infantry, passed
Che Foo ou Friday on her way to Taku.
CANNON CLUBBED TO DEATH
Four Young Mon In Jail Charged With
Killing Him.
Dublin, Ga., July 9.—William Ford-
ham, Jack Ha.skin, Jesso Webb aud
George Davis, four young men from
Howard’s district, this county, wore
brought hero and lodged in jail on a
charge of voluntary manslaughter. The
four young men, in company with Can
lion and his father, Ben Cannon, were
at Ford ham’s store and got into a diffi
culty.
Young Cannon was badly beaten with
sticks and sandbags, the injuries in
flicted being such as to cause death in a
few hours.
Farmer Badly Injured.
LaFayette, Ga., July 11.—G. W.
Patterson, a farmer of Walker county,
residing near hero, was fatally injured
by n wheat thresher falling on him from
a hill -id*?, Where lie was at work. His
right leg’was broken in two places, his
left log in one place. He was seriously
injured internally.
