Mr. George Duncan has effected the
lease of Mr. John It. Shaw's handsome
double stores on Forsyth street, and
on September 1st will remove there
from his present place of business on
Jackson street in the Windsor Hotel
block.
The trade for the lease of the proper
ty was closed yesterday.
The Shaw stores, now oecnpied by
the E. D. Sheffield Company, is very
desirable property. Tho stores nro
among the largest in Americus and
elegant iu all their appointments.
Mr. Duncan says that ho will havo
to increase his already large stock in
order to till the capacious stores, and
ho is going to do this. It is not yet
known who will occupy his desirable
store iu The Windsor, but it will
scarcely remain vacant.
There are few desirable vacant stores
iu Americus—or houses, either.
Tho E. D. Sheffield Company, which
has occupied the Shaw stores for sev
eral years, will remove September 1st
to the large etore room on Cotton

pocket of gold has been found in a vein
running through a Crow mountain tun
nel. The ore, as assayed, will yield
$1,000 per ton. Tho average yield of the
vein in which this pocket was struck is
abuut jj ]>er ton, and when it is consid
ered that the entire mountain is made
of “pay dirt,” which, though of low
grade ore, is very easily worked, it will
be seen that these numerous pockors

state.
The Hand mine is in full swing. An
enormous quantity of concentrates is on
band, soon to be run through the Ohloi-i-
nation plant, one of tho best in the

Smith, under indictment for murder,

for several months, having been released
on bond, has boon arrested at the in-
liauco of his bondsmen and will bo

that Smith did uot intend to return to

had a 17-year-old boy in his employ
named Traffeurcid, whom ho suspected
of stealing corn. It was arranged that

him. There was a real cartridge in one
of tho guns and tho la,y was killed.
Bates was tried aud acquitted, hut Smith
has uot yet been tried.

men havo refused to work bosido tho
negro carpenters and nonunion men.
Tho union men claim that it is beneficial
to work only with union men, as best
satisfaction cau bo given to both con
tractors and parties to whom tho work
belongs. It is also claimed that tho
strike is not on tho grounds of race
prejudices or wages so much as to pro
tect tho union.
Tho contractors rofuse to consider the
demands of the union men.
Lynching Near Columbia, Ala., For
the Usual Crime.
Columbia. Ala., July 6.—John Roe,
an 18-year-old negro boy, was lynched
here for an attempted outrage on Mr&
Mary McGriff, wife of a well known
planter. Mrs. McGriff fought desper
ately and succeeded in beating the ne
gro off. ^
Roe was taken to Airs. McGrifir, who
identified him as her assailant. A mob
of sovcral hundred carried Roe to a qoo-
vcnicut tree, swnng him np and riddled
his body with bullets.
