■It was stated by those in a position tu

Wu was entirely devoid of official sig

present puriioso of going to China.
San Francisco, July 14.—Major Hugh
Gallagher, chief commissary of subsist
ence of the department of California,
has received telegraphic orders from
Washington, directing him to proceed

Washington, July 14.—The Chinese

Washington, July 14.—Tho Japanese
legation hero has received a dispatch
from the minister of foreign affairi
stating that after the German ministei
was shot at Peking tho German marine!
made an assault upon tho tsung li yomeu
and burned down the building. The
dispatch goes into tho affair m detail.
STARTLING DEVELOPMENTS,
Consul Uoodeuow's Dispatch Show!
Conditions Are Growing Worse.
Washington, July 14.—Consul Gen
eral Goodeuow’s short dispatch repre
sents all that tho state or navy depart
ments know of tho developments in
China within the last 24 hours. Hil
news only g6es to confirm tho general
belief that the situation in China ii
steadily growing worse. The Ho Nan
Shan Shi referred to by Mr. Goodeuow
as the place where tho viceroy appear!
to favor tho Boxers, is said at tho staid
department to be actually two separate
provinces of vast extent lying in the
western and northern portion of China.
Shan Shi, meaning western island, is
tho province lying directly west of Chili,
in which Peking is located. Ho Nan
adjoins Shan Shi on the soutli.
The two might present an almost im
passible barrier if, as Mr. Goodenow’*
dispatch indicates, they are disuffecteil
and undertake to oppose the northward
march of tho armies of Li Hung Chang
and tho other great southern viceroys tc
Peking.
No confirmation has reached the state
department of the report from St. Po-

terstrarg of the torture and death of tlte
Russian minister at Pekiug. Dr. Von
HoUeben, tho German ambassador,
called upon Secretary Hay, but stated
that he had uo information touching tho
Chiueso situation.
A rumor was afloat during the morn
ing to tho effect that eertaiu interviews
attributed to the Chinese minister here,
Mr. Wu, had attracted official attention
and might bo made the subject of rep
resentations to him by the state depart
ment. It is understood that nothing
has yet been done in that direction,
however, and it is believed that the in
terviews may K< ignored officially in
view of the realization on the part of the
officials that tho minister is under high
nervous tension.
Minister Wu Depressed.
Washington, July 14.—The Chiuese
minister continues to use his efforts to
ward getting information from Peking,
but up to a late hour he had not received
any answer it; connection with the ca
blegram to Minister Conger or from any
inquiry which he forwarded.
Minister Wu was much depressed by
continued reports that the legations had
been wiped out and the ministers mur
dered. The report of tho killing of the
Russian minister and his wife was an
other severe blow, but as to this, also,
Minister Wu said that In- Uai absolutely
nothing.
