Fate—Tortured With Sharp Sticks
Until Life Was Kxtlnct—Legation
0(11 rials AIJ^ Brutally Murderjd.
St. Petersburg, July Ik—Tho czar
has received with great emotion the
dreadful details of the catastrophe at
Peking. Tears coursed down his majes
ty's cheeks as ho read the cablegram
from Admiral Alexieff, at Port Arthur,
confirming tho horrible details of the
assassination of M. DeGiers, which had
already reached Russia. The admiral
declares that tho Russian envoy was
draggod through the streets by tho Box
ers, insulted, beaten and tortured, ami
even thrown into a great kettle and
boiled to death. Then the remains were
thrown to the dogs. While 31. DeGiers
was being disposed of the frantio mob
danced around the caldron.
Mme. DeGiers, Admiral Alexiell’s ad
vices declare, suffered a fate worse than
death and was beaten and tortured with
sharp sticks until life was extinct.
Tho legation officials are said to have
been tortured lioudishly until death
ended their sufferings. M. DeGier3 and
his legation.officials resisted desperately
and his brave body guard killed many
of tho attacking mob. In tho midst of
his tortures the envoy is said to have
heroically proclaimed his faith in Chris
tianity, encouraged by tho wife who so
soon shared his martyrdom.
Tho unuuunccmcut of this intelli
gence to the relatives of the Russiun
martys in China was accompanied by
heart rending scenes. Count Lamsdorf
received the friends of the murdered
ones at the foreign office and unfolded
to them the tragic gtory. The scenes of
frenzied terror and grief that followed
were unspeakable. The building of the
foreign office was beseiged by on excit
ing throng and the whole of St. Peters
burg is full of lamentation. Immedi
ately uiion tho receipt of Admiral
Alexieff’s dispatch tile czar called the
cabinet ami council of state to go Into

Whut Officials Say.
Washington, July 14—Tho Russian
embassy here has received no informa
tion of the killing of the Russian minis
ter at Peking. The officials do not dis
credit the story, but say that the Rus
sians are under the same disadvantage
as the other [lowers in getting tele
graphic information from Peking. They
think that if this proves true it will eu
tirely and very seriously alter the whole
situation.

Two Guns Lost to tho Enemy.
Burghers Attack at Daylight and
the Fight Was Continued AJl Day.
Pretoria, Jufy 15.— fiomuel SJufian,
reinforced by General French’s brigade,
has taken nil the positions held, by the
Boors in tho neighborhood of Reitfou-
tein. A number of Boer dead were
found. Tho British casualties were
trifling. f
Details are now at hand regarding tho
disaster to tho Lincolnshire regiment.
It appears that five companies were or
(lered to hold the pass through Magules-
burg, in tho neighborhood or Daspoort-
fort. They nrrived at tho pass in the
afternoon, where three companies with
two gnns took up a position and camped
for the night, leaving two companies on
a plain side of the pass. Tho eastern
hill was rugged aud rocky nnd inac
cessible, but further east appureutly ap
proachable from tho main ridge. At
daybreak tho Boors appeared on tho
eastern kopje aud opened a heavy tire.
Coufusion ensued. Tho colonel ordered
tho muii to take up u position on a kopje
west of the gap. From tills point n not
firo ensued during tho entire day.
Doers Employing Natives.
Two gnns under tho escort of tho
Scots Greys, placed in advance of the
muiu body, wore captured nfter a stent
resistance. Neurly every man was kill
od or wounded. A maxim gun was
brought into action early in tho day.
Tho fire was too hot, nnd tho men were
finally forced to retire. A sergeant,
aided by seven volunteers, saved tho
gun.
About 3 o’clock in tho afternoon the
Boers appeared to the left of the position
occupied by the British. An officer and
15 men attempted to charge tho men
and 14 were killed and wounded as tho
result of the charge. Throe companies
were practically surrounded, but they
kept up n steady fire until toward night
fall, when their ammunition had been
expended. It ts understood upon good
authority that the Boers have employed
armed natives. Two of tho natives
leaped from cover, when a small party
from tho Lincolnshire regiment stoppoi
ap and demanded their surrender. On<
officer, who succeeded in making his es-
cape, had an encounter with on armed
native. It is feared that the losses of the
British were numerous. About 30 of tho
British soldiers have straggled back to
camp.
