however, “a burn child dreads fire,” you know. So an oft
humbugged buyer is shy of being humbugeed again. This
store reaches out tor the doubting ones, and desires to prove

President Egan of Central Says Crop
is Abundant.
Nearly a carload of peaches grown in
the vicinity of Americas went forward
yesterday via the Central. In fact, the
best Eibertas are just coming to
market, and many line specimens were
shown here yesterday. At shipping
points above Americas the season will
reach its height this week. President
John M. Egan, of the Central Railroad,
who was in Americas last Saturday
looking after the frait crop along this
line of road, has just returned to Sa
vannah. He says the damage from
rains has been overestimated and that
there will be literally millions of boBk-
ets of Georgia Eibertas marketed. The
climax of the season will be reached
daring the present week. Daily ahip'
ments now nnmber upwards of eighty
carloads oyer the Central. On this line
there are now more than 2,100,000
peach trees in bearing, many of them
loaded with frait till the limbs are al
most breaking. In addition there are
200,000 pinm trees bearing finer plains
than those of California. Half a mil
lion new peach trees were planted tyis
year and will become producers two
years hence.
BARBERS HAD SPIRITED SCBAP.
No Right to Ugliness.
The woman who is lovely in face
form and temper will always have
friends, but one who would be attractive
must keep her health. If she is weak,
sickly and a'.l run down she will be ner
vous and irritable. If she has constipa
tion or kidney trouble, her impure
blood will cause pimples, blotohes, skin
eruptions and a wrefehed complexion.
Eleotric Bitters is the best medicine In
the world to regulate stomach, liver and
kidneys and to purify the blood. It
gives strong nerves, bright eyes, smooth
velvety skin, rich complexion. It will
make a good-looking, charming woman

Three Cornered Fight Among Them
on Jackson Street,
A very lively fistic debate occurred
yesterday morning near the white bar
ber shop on Jackson street, the partic
ipants being W. H. Estes, D. Cochran
and Brooks Boswortb. The first round
was between Estes and Cochran, when
the entry of yonng Boswortb, who took
the part of Ur. Estes, made it three-
cornered. At this jnnctnre several
bystanders interfered and stopped the
fight jnst as Officer Glawson ran np,
The canse of the tronble was a disa
greement over some settlement between
Estes and Cochran. The latter was
considerably braised at the hands of
his two opponents. Mayor Hixon will
bs "next” in police court this morning.

Capt, McKenzie is to be transferred to
Social Circle to assume the manage

point, and leaves today for his new
field. His son, Roy McKenzie, was
sent yesterday from the factory at Ma

McKenzie will go to Social Circle to-
day. Their departure is regretted by
the people of Amerione generally, as

ADDRESS BY HON. J. R. LAMAR
Distinguished Georgian Delivers an
Oration to Tennessee Lawyers.
Chattanooga, July 18.—The lending
feature of the first day's session of the
Tennessee Bar association was the an
nual oration by Hon. Joseph R. Lamar
of Georgia on the subject of “A Cen
tury’s progress of the Law.”
The session was called to order at 11
B 'clock by President W. L. Walkor, who
idke of the work accomplished in the
poat urt that marked ont for future ac-
iplishment.
'he other bnsiness of the day was the
■report of Treasurer Charles N. Burch
and of Chairman H. H. Iugcrsoll of the
central committee. The attendance is
• much larger than usual.
Rich Vein of Sliver Located.
Athens, Ala., Jnly lfl.—Tho govern
ment has a mineral expert, Mr. Lucas,
in this county visiting the iron and
ites outcroppings, also looking into
phosphate beds. Just across the
line In Tennessee a man has located a
* valuable silver vein. It is said by those
familiar with the mineral to bo very
* \ rich in silver and easily worked.

CANDIDATES ALL ON HAND.
Desperate Ktght Will Re Msdo on
Governor Beckham.
Lexington, Ky., July 18.—The dele
gates oro not all here for the Demo
cratic state convention, but tho candi
dates and their workers are on hand.
A largo delegation of state officials and
others come with Governor Beckham
from Frankfort, while the friends of
McCreary, Black, Tarvin, Lewis, Smith,
Garnett and Pryor are also here. Judge
Black has the most aggressive anti-
Beckham delegations here for him.
It is thought that Beckham will have
less trouble with the contests before the
committee on credentials and with both
the temporary and the permanent or
ganization of the convention than ho
wiU have with the committee on resolu
tions. The platform will be adopted
before the nomination for governor is
made, and if the plank on the modifica
tion of the Goebel election law is not
satisfactory there may be a movement
on the floor of the convention to change
it. If a minority report on resolutions
is adopted over the majority report that
the Beckham men expect to submit, then
tbs field of candidates against Beckham
WiU'make a'desperate fight.

Barbers Who Scrapped are Before the
Police Court.
The police conrtroom was thronged
yesterday morning when Mayor Hixon
called the case of W. H. Estes, Brooke
Bosworth and L. Cochran, tbe three
men who engaged in a street fight
near the white barber shop the day
previous. Mr. Boswortb, it is said,
had previously entered a plea of guil
ty, but his case in police court has not
yet keen disposed of. After delivering
tbe fighters a leeturo Mayor Hixon
dismissed tbe case against Cochran, as
it was shown that he was the party at
tacked, while Mr. Estes was bound
over to tbe county coart apon a state
charge, in addition to a fine of 8-5
imposed.
Only Officers For Chinese Service are
Plentiful.
The prospect of a clash with the ori
ental pigtails in the realm of Li Hang
Chang has not caused any wild ont-
bnrst of patriotio feeling among the
Americas yontb. Of coarse there are
several hundred here who would brave
ly serve their country as commissioned
officers, bat the real soldiers, those
who carry the gone, do the fighting
and stack their interior with hardtack
and embalmed beef, are hunting no
more jobs in foreign lands. Cuba
cooked them, and few here will go to
China. 1
WINE INDUSTRY IS PROFITABLE
Americas Citizens are Making a Large
Quantity.
Never btfore has such a magnificent
crop of grapes been grown in tbe vine
yards about Americus, and our thrifty
farmers are turning this luscious frait
to good account. In some of the vine
yards about town tbe yield of grapes
of the finer varieties will amount to
several tons, and already the fruit
being converted into wine. Several
thousand gallons of excellent wine will
be made right bere within the next
two weeks, and tbe price received for
it later will pay the producers band-
