London, July 20.— Toadd tothogloom
occasioned by the serious import of
Hews showing the daily developing of
anti foreign movement in the south
of China, comes from Shanghai n rt-port
that <30 missionaries-and lOu native eon-
verts hud been massacred at Tai Yuan.
Though the report is not yet corrobor
ated, it tends to confirm the belief that
hope that the centml and southern vice
royalties would hold aloof from the
Boxer rising has never, had much founda
tion.
If this massacre has occurred in the
province of 8hun See there can be little
doubt that .the intense dfcxiety for the
safety of the international colonies at
the river pjrfs aud even Shanghai is
fully justified',.for an attack later by tho
masses of the Chinese gfltheriug in and
fibout tho international concessions

T,hd authorities at St. Petersburg are
satisfied that the relief efforts at Harbin
(which is identical with Charbiu) will
be successful. With a view to showing
his good faith, the Chinese minister at
St. Petersburg has begged the Russian
foreign secretary to examine all dis
patches arriving from the legation bo-
Xore their delivery.
Indian troops are daily arriving at
Hong-Kong enroute to Taku.
A Hotig-Kong dispatch reports a
daring act of piracy within the harbor
there, A score of pirates armed with
revolvers seized a launch and took it up
the Canton river, capturing two junks
enroute. After looting the craft the
pirates abandoned them.
