New Orleans, July 29.—Coutrary to
expectations the night passed with lit
tle disorder. The prompt action of the
mayor in distributing squads of men
through the city and tho fact that
Charles Is dead seems to have had a
good effect in quieting the populace.
The negroes are apparently glad that
Charles is dead. *
Mayor Capdevielle, who is worn out
by hia long struggle, said that he thought
it tvus unlikely that there would be any
further violence.
Muub feeling is expressed against the
police board and there is some talk of
itsi removal and a reorganization of the
police force.
With the death of the negro Charles

Arrangements are boiag made for the
funeral of the victims of yesterday’s
tragedy and details of police will bo
sent to accompany each in order that
no disturbances may attend them.
Whatever doubt there may have been
as to the identity of the negro Charles
has been removed. At 1 o'clock when
the mobs had dispersed the police went
to the parish prison and got Leonard
Pierson, Charles’ pal, on the evening
that Mora was wounded, and carried
him to the morgue. Pierson, without
any hesitancy, declared that the dead
man was the desperado.
Coroner Richard held a post mortem
examination on the body or Charles. He
found that tho negro had been shot 48
times, besides having been badly beateu.
Several meu have claimed the credit of
having killod Charles. Men who were
present at tho time that Charles was at*
tempting to make his escape from the
burning building s^id that Private An
derson and Dr. C. A. Noiret, a young
medical student, had done the actum
killing.
Thousands of negroes have emigrated
from the city.
When it became known that such was
the case it was evident that both would
bellyached, and they were carried to
Macon for safe koepiug.

Greut .Southern Inter-State Fair Is Of
fering the Largest Premiums Ever
Advertised For Agricultural Pro
ducts—Women’s Department.
The Premium List^, of the Southern
Inter-State Fair is now ready for distri
bntion and those who desire a copy
should apply at onoe to Secretary T. H,
Martin, 218 Prudential Building,/At
lunta. It will be mailed without charge.
Tho premiums of last year have been
increased about 30 per cent. The classes
have been extended also, thus offering
greater opportunity for the exhibit of
more complete lines. Many novel and
Interesting contests have been arranged.
Attention has already been called to
the "Giant Premiums” offered for agri
cultural products. These s,—
are record breakers. They excel auy
premiums ever before offered for this
character of exhibits.- Wheut, oats,
corn, potatoes, cottou and pumpkins
come in for big money. 8250.00 1
offered for the best bnshel of the various
sorts of grain. The same is offered for
the best 20 stalks of cottoa and the same
for the largest pumpkin.
There ore five large prizes offered for
{be best collective agricultural exhibits
made by Georgia formers—8300, 8300,
1100, 800 and 840, respectively, for the
five best exhibits of this character. The
basis of competition and all information
regarding the contest is given in the
Premium List.
Another interesting lot of premiums
are those offered in the Cattle Depart
ment. There has always been qnite a
demand for classes in this department
pen only to Georgia owned animals.
Int separate classes of this character
have heretofore been impossible on ac
count of the additional expense. Hap
pily this, objection has been met by a
fall treasury aud tbe double classes ore
offered this year. The Fair Association
has been enoonraged to do this an ac
count of the great success of tbe Cattle
Department last year and it is hoped
that the Georgia entries this year will
prove the wisdom of the Fair Associa
tion in making this additional expendi
ture.
The Department of Women’s Work
and the Flower Show have beon placed in
charge of the Georgia Federation of
Women's Clubs, of which Mrs. J. Lind
say Johnson is president. This does n8t
mean, however, that only members of
mean, nowever, mat only members of
this organization will be allowed to make
entries in this Department. The priv
ilege of exhibit is given to all and file
cations are that tho Department of
Women’s Work will be one of the most
interesting of the Fair. <
Every Department of the Premium
List is fall of interest. It is well.worth
inspection, whether or not one expects
to become an exhibitor. Bvon a synop
sis of the lists here would be quite im
possible for lack of apaoe. Send and get
a copy. That is tbe best way, and then
you will have tho whole story. e
