Prices Offered.
Fourteen bales of cotton of the lew
crop were received at Americus' ware
houses (Saturday. every bale of which
was grown in Sumter and brought
here bj wagon, 6old at a good price
and the money, good cotton money,
spent here in Americus.
Verily, the good days of prosperity
are coming round again.
It was indeed a cheering sight when
a country team would drive up to
warehouse and throw off" two or three
bales to be sampled and sold.
The bales brought in yesterday were
pretty generally distributed among the
warehousemen, and buyers were kept
busy for an hour or two shifting from
one house to another, examining the
snowy samples and making bids on
same.
And no one thought of offering leBS
than nine cents for cotton.
That was the tigure at wnich the
owners were willing to part with it,
and all that was sold yesterday brought
nine cents.
Americus has received twenty-one
bales of the new crop to date, and a
week hence the total will probably run
to 250 or 300 bales. Dry weather is
causing the bolls to open rapidly and
many farmers will begin picking cot
ton in earnest now.
There was a substantial advance in
prices yesterday, August contraotp,
which is spot cotton, closing firm at 0.33,

The readers [of this paper will be
pleased to learn that there is at least one
dreaded disease that science has been
able to cure in all its stages, and that
is Catarrh. Hall’s Catarrh Cure is the
only positive cure known to the medical
fraternity. Catarrh being a constitu
tional disease, requires constitutional
treatment. Hall’s Catarih Cure is taken
internally, acting directly upon the
blood anil mucous surfaces of tho sys
tern, thereby destroying tho foundation
of the disease, and giving the patient
strength by building up the constitu
tion and assisting nature in dolDg its
work. The proprietors have so much
faith in its curative powors, that they
offer One Hundred Dollars for any cat e

Prevented a Tragedy.
Timely Information given Mrs. Geo.
Long, of N?w Straltsvillf, Ohio, pre
vented a dreadful tragedy and saved two
lives. A frightful cough bad long kept
her awake every night. She hail tried
many remedies and doctors but sfead'ly
grew werso uutll urged to try Dr. King’s
New Discovery, Oue bottle wholly cur
ed her, and she writes this marvelous
medicine also cured Mr. Long of a severe
attack of Pneumonia. Such cures are
positive proof of the matchless merit of
this grand remedy for curing all threat,
chest and lung troubles. Only 50c and

bottles free at E. J. Eldrldge, drugstore,
State Society.
The State Agricultural Society has
finished its annual session at Dublin
and meets next year in Thomasville.
Judge J. H. Black, of Sumter, for
many years ono of the honored vice-
presidents of the Society, was again
chosen to that position. Among the
interesting addresses before the Soci
ety was one by Prof. H. E, Stock-
bridge, a Sumter county farmer and
former citizen of Americus but now-
director of tho Florida experimental
station. It was upon the subject of
sugar cane, and be told the members
bow to grow it and how to keen it from
fermenting in an ordinary barrel. Fill
a barrel, ho said, with the mosB that
grows upon the trees and run the juice
through it before cooking it, and the
syrup would keep for fivo years un
sealed. He said be sold a-year-ohl
syrup recently in barrels for I’.O cents
per gallon.

STRANDING OF ANOTHER NOAH.
This One Missed Ararat But Struck
Sumter's Castle.
Another story of Noah was written
yesterday, somewhat different from tho
original, and with the county jail in
stead of Ararat as the stranding point.
Noah Smith is tho modern mariner to
be dealt with, and instead of pairs of
animals this Noah had a pair of ma
chine appliances for which he could
give no satisfactory account. Noah
was cruising along Forsyth street when
he beheld a storm cloud iu the form of
Officer Glawson, and immediately
shaped his course for Muckalee. A
spirited chase resulted, the armed
warship of the law quickly overhauling
the black craft near the gasworks.
Noah had some 820 worth of engine
fixtures, which the polioo assert was
stolen, and now the owner of the pi
ratical craft has been drydocked at the
bastile for overhauling and reassign
ment to foreign waters when court
convenes.

FINISHED UP FRUIT SHIPMENTS
Georgia Exported Hardly 2.0C0 Cars
Peaches.
Some fairly good peaches are
brought to Americus now but the sea
son, especially for shipping, is ended.
No more Georgia peaches are going to
Northern and Eastern markets. The
total number of cars shipped from
Georgia during the season was 1371,
of which 1,-1311 were handled by the
Central. It is believed that about 150
cars may be added to the total of the
crop to include the peaches shipped by
express or by local freight.
PURCHASING GOODS IN PELKAI
Our
Americus Firm Buying From
Thrifty Neighbor.
Piled up m front of a local drygoods
store yesterday were cases of domestics
manufactured by the splendid one
hundred thousand dollar mill located
in the little town of Pelham, Ga., about
one-filth the size of Americus. Around
the corner a grocer wbb opening up
cases of canned goods shipped here
from the two great canning establish
ments at Fort Valley. Thus Pelham
clothes us and Fort Valley feeds ns.
The moral is self evident.
And Movement to Have Reunion is a
Success.
Pursuant to request of Judge J. H.
Pilsbury, a number of Confederate
veterans met at city hall yesterday for
tho pnrposo of considering the pro
posed veterans reunion here on Hept.
1st., and taking the necessary steps to
insure its succesp. After considerable
discussion a canvassing committee of
fire was appointed, who will look after
subscriptions and report back to a
meeting of veterans two weeks hence.
Of a party of six gentlemen accosted
afterwards, each promised to contrib
ute a porker for the barbecue dinner.
J ndge Pilsbury and all the veterans
present were enthusiastic over the
proposed reunion and are
make a success of it.
The jury box of Sumter county con
tains about 350 names as the result of
the revision completed yesterday, and
that number is between 400 and .500
short of the total contained in the box
daring the past two years and from
which grand and travers jurors have
been drawn heretofore.
The total is about 000 against 1,115
names in the box heretofore.
The commissioners, Messrs. J. K.
Battle, C. C. Sheppard, J. J. Ilanes-
ley, G. W. Glover and J. F. Bolton,
completed their work at noon yester
day, drew jmies for October court
and adjourned.
In speaking of the great disparity in
tho number of old and new uames in
the jury box, one of the commissioners
said yesterday that the names jast
didn’t appear on the tax books, and as
the new list was made up entirely from
that record there was no other alterna
tive than to leavo oil some of the best
citizens of tho county.
Tho fault, therefore, is their own
and not that of the commissioners.
Hundreds of tax payers failed or re
fused to make returns of their property
this year, and the names of all of these
are left out of the jury box.
Then there are citizens who never
servo on a jury, though their names
have been in the box for years. They
usually come forward with a legitimate
excuse and are let off. For this reason
the jury commissioners decided to let
them oil' permanently and their names
were, therefore, omitted in the recent
revision.
There was good reason for this, the
eommissioner thought, as it tended to
keep down the professional and omni
present talesman, who is always on
hand to be “caught on the jury” if an
occasion was presented.
All the doctors were left off, as they
rarely serve on a jury, but the name of
every preacher went into tho box.
Many prominent business men here
were left out because they had not
made returns of properly, while good
men in tho country districts went off
the lists for tho samo reason.
The names of 533 travers and 142
grand jurors alone went into the jury
box this week, the smallest number in
years.
