Sumter county has an organization
of cotton growers which has the sym
pathy and support of the business in
terests of Americus, but in some coun
ties organization has not keen effected
and to these especially Fresident Jor
dan, of the State Association, issues an
address which is of interest to all alike
in tbe organized fight to be made
against the cotton sharks this year.
His call to business men, bankers
and farmers, is as follows:
I have deemed it best to issue a call
asking the cotton growers and business
men generally of the state to come to
gether at their various county seats on
the first Tuesday in September for the
purpose of completing snb-organiza-
tions of onr association in the different
counties. A large number of counties
have already organized and many more
have named dates to eome together in
the near future.
"The farmers have it absolutely in
their power to control the situation at
present, and efforts should be made to
aid them in the struggle for better and
higher prices, More than 81S.000.000
can be saved to the Georgia farmers if
they receive 10 cents per ponnd for
their cottoD, which will be lost if they
rash the crop on the market and sac
rifice it at 7 cents.
"The members of tbe Georgia State
Agricultural Society in convention at
Dublin last Thursday, unanimously
indorsed the effort of onr association
imbehalf of tbe cotton prodneers and
agreed to give their aotive co-operation
to tbe movement in making the present
undertaking a success this season.
“The Georgia bankers nad already
guaranteed their willingness and abili
ty to aid the members of the associa
tion as to advancing money on cotton
in storage which would enable tbe
prodneers to market the crop slowly.
"The cotton mills of the South are
.with us, and all tbe lines of business
trades and professions are willing to
lend n helpful band toward securing
for the [farmers a higher price for
their staple.
“If the crop is marketed slowly, we
may confidently look for 10 cent cotton
by the first of Ootober, and to that end
wo must all combine our efforts and
take a determined stand against allow
ing the crop to be sacrificed at 7 cents
per pound, which the speculators are
industriously trying to force upon
our people."
BROWN’S TWO SHOTS
STRUCK THE TARGET
And Colored Funeral Will Probably
Occur Shortly.
DUGG’S CONDITION IS CRITICAL.
Negro Shoots Companion Probably
Without Cause or Justification.—
Had Taken Victim's Money and Re
fused to Return it.
Jim Drown is tbe latest arrival at
Castle Sumter, where he will remain
for trial for the shooting of Schnmp
Dnggs, another negro, whose hide he
pumped full of bullets a few days since
in a spirit of pleasantry and to dispel
the ennni that hung like a pall about
the scene.
Duggs’ condition is critical and he
will probably die shortly.
From accounts of the afiair the shoot
ing was unprovoked, and whether the
victim dies or recovers it means a term
in the gang for Brown if he escaped a
worse fate.
It is said that Dnggs was buying a
melon and laid a dollar down, which
Drown promptly snatched and pat in
his pocket. Daggb’ demand for bis
dollar met with an insnlting refusal,
aud when he still approached Brown
to recover it the latter shot him twice.
One bnllet penetrated Dnggb’ abdo
men while a second shot went through
his leg. His condition is regarded as
most serions.
Brown hid out ana swore mat no
officer living could take him alive. He
went over the river into Dooly connty,
where he was arrested without trouble
yesterday morning and sent to Amer
icas on the Sboofly. He wont get a
chance to kill anybody else just now.
Sinee his arrest Brown is nneasy
about the affair, and now tries to im
agine that Dnggs bad razor when he
was shot down.
Story of a Slave.
To b bound hind and foot for years,
by tbe chains of disease is the worst
form of slavery, tjeorge D. Williams,
of Manohester, Mich., tells how such a
slave was made free. He says: "My
wife has been so helpless for five years
that she could not turn over In bed
alone. After using two bottles of Eleo-
trlo Bitter?, she is wonderfully improv
ed and able to do her own work.” This
supreme remedy for femalo diseases
quickly cures nervousness, sleepless
ness, melancholy, headache, backache,
fainting and dizzy spells. This mira
cle-working medicine is a godsend to
weak, sickly, run down people. Every
bottle guaranteed. Only 50 cents. Sold

Valued and Esteemed Resident
Webster Dead.
A telegram received hero yesterday
morning conveyed the sad intelligence
of the death of Mr. J. F. Stapleton,
which occurred tbe night previous at
his home iu Webster county. Mr,
Stapleton was one of the oldest and
most highly esteemed residents of
Webstor, and had resided there tbe
greater part of bis life. He was more
than eighty years of age and tbe father
of Mr. JamcB R. Stapleton of Preston,
and of Messrs. George and Lawson
Stapleton, of Americus, Ho was a
man of strict integrity and high sense
of honor, and no one was held in great
er estimation by tbe people of his
