So Says Sharkey of Fitzsimmons.
Thinks He Will Whip Jeffries.
New York, Ang. 25.—That tho fight
between Robert Fitzsimmons and Tom
Sharkey last night was on the sqaare
the mumlmous opinion of all morning
papers and most of the reputable sport
ing men who witnessed the bout.
Charley White, who refereed tho bout,
when seen at on early hour this morn
ing. said:
"The fight was on tho level. Though
short it was the best mill I ever saw
and the best man won. Both men dis
played great gameness. Each man had
a hard punch. It was a hard, fast, fu
rious fight from the first tap of tho bell.
Both men were clever aud kept away
from each other in the early stages, bat
toward the end of the first round they
begun to sing In earnest. Sharkey
landed a heavy swing on Fitzsimmons
just as tho gong soundod at tho ond of
the round. The blow knocked Fitzsim
mons down, but it was a trifle too
high to bo effective. Fitzsimmons aud
Sharkey mixed it up from tku opening
to the finish of the last round. Fitz
simmons got in a number of hard
lunches on Sharkey thnt would have
mocked out a less courageous mail than
the sailor. When the end came Sharkey
stood tho rain of blows llko tho stoio ho
is. When aearly gone Fitzsimmons got
in his famous left hook on tho jaw that
won the fight. Fitzsimmons proved by
his fight that he is a clover, shifty man
with a hard punch.”
Fitzsimmons said:
"I knew all along that I would win,
but really I did not think I would do it
so quickly. I thought Sharkey would
last five rounds. I was in the best con
dition of my life. I canuot say what 1
think of Sharkey, becauso tho fight was
too short to size him up. He is not as
good a man ns RuhliD, though. Ruhlin
i a more clover, but Sharkey depends
more ou rushes to win. Ho can hit
harder than Ruhlin aud is a gamo fcl
low. I am going to take a rest. 1
think I need ono. If they give mo
enough money I think I shall bo ready
to fight Jeffries some time in tho next
six months.”
Sharkey accepted his defeat good no-
turedly.
“lam just a case of hard luck,” ho
said, “but that is ono of tho fortunes of
war. Fitzsimmons Is a wonderful
fighter for a man of his ago. He is tho
greatest hitter In the world. All I want
to say is that Fitzsimmons can beat them
nil. He’ll whip Jeffries sure If they
ever meet.”
Fitzsimmons Attends a Dance.

London, Ang. 25.—The report sent
from Washington that Germany is pre
paring to make San Francisco a base of

powerful nrmy to China, bos attracted
considerable attention. It is learned
that German orders for stores and pro
