THE 4MERICUS WEEKLY TIMES--RECORDEK: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, i! 00
COMPANY REBUILDS
AMERICUS PLANT.
larger and Better Than Before the
Fire.
CAPACITY WILL BE INCREASED.
President Morgan of Virginia-Caroli-
na Company Says Plants at Amen-
cus and Albany Will be Operated
Shortly.
It is with a great deal of pleasure
The Timea-ltecorder informs ite cit
izens of Americus that tho Virgiuia-
Carolina Chemical Company will short
ly reenme the operation of its splendid
plant in Americas as well as that at
Albany, both of which have been clos
cd down for somo time.
And not only will the plants be op
erated, bnt the capacity of tho acid
chamber of each plant will be increased
CO per cent, thns increasing the ontpnt
of fertilizers to be manufactured.
This infomatioi comes to The
Times-Recorder direct from President
£3. T, Morgan.
On last Friday, 14th. inst., The
Times-Recorder referred in a local ar
ticle to the company's plant here, stat
ing that in the ovent the Virginia-
Carolina Co. should ultimately deter
mine not to rebuild that portion of its
plant destroyed by fire, and abandoned
thiB field, a local company would be
organized,
Inasmuch as the Virginia-Carolina
Co. was on the ground, its pleasure in
the matter wonld be a-Tailed for
timo.
And now comes the very gratifying
information, conveyed in a letter from
President Morgan, that it is the pur
pose of his great company to rebuild
the destroyed acid chambers here as
soon as possible; that the company
proposes to increase their capacity
fifty per cent, above former dimen
sions, and build them in the latest and
most improved style besides.
The fertilizer plant here was not de
stroyed by fire and, President Morgan
writes, will be in fall operation this
season.
The large plant at Albany, likewise
owned by the Virginia-Carolina Co.
and which recently has been closed
down, will be operated also this season
to its full capaoity. The acid cham
bers there will be enlarged 50 per cent.
The company’s construction depart
ment, President Morgan states, is now
engaged in repairing and rebuilding
plants at one or two other points, ‘and
when this is finished the working force
will begin the rebuilding of the Amer-
iens plant and later on the repairs up
on the plant at Albany.
This will indeed do gratifying intel
ligence to our citizens, as well as to
those of Albany.
A Combination of Law and Agricul
ture Promised.
Hnmter's handsome senior represen
tative, Col. W. T. Lane, is coing to
join the ranks ot agriculturists and
cultivate cotton while expounding
Rlackstono and compounding new
laws. Yesterday, with Mr. Jarrett
Wilson, he purchased the Sea farm of
405 acres, and has already applied for
admission into the Sumter County
Agricultural Society, The success of
other members of the local bar as ag
riculturists, notably Col. J. It. Wil
liams, Col. W. A. Dodson, Col. E. C.
Speer, Col. J. A. Hixon and others, to
say nothing of Col. Joe Ansley’s phe
nomenal success as a rabbit farmer,
ins been an inspiration to their breth
ren at the bar, and it may bo expected
that at no distant day every Americus
lawyer will be able to discuss barrows
and plows with the same familiarity
they now discuss homesteads and
mortgages.

A SINGLE FIELD IS UNPICKED
In Distance of Twenty Miles But One
Remains.
The cotton crop in Sumter county is
being harvested more rapidly than
evor before known. Already many
fields have lost their whiteness and
are nearly ready to be converted into
pastures for cattle. A prominent cit
izen of Americas told the Times-Re
corder yesterday that in a drive of
twenty miles the day before ho saw but
one cotton field that had not been
picked over, and this contained less
than twenty acres. His trip was
through as good farming section of
Sumter and Macon counties as can be
found, and the samo conditions pre
vail elsewhere. The crop will soon be
pieked out and marketed, and will be
far shorter than last year’s crop.
Prevented a Tragedy.
Timely information given Mrs. Geo.
Long, of New Straltsvllle, Ohio, pre
vented a dreadful tragedy and saved two
lives. A frightful cough had long kept
her awake every night. She had tried
many remedies and doctors but stead'ly
grew worso uutll urged to try Dr. King’s
New Dlsoovery. One bottle wholly cur
ed her, and she writes this marvelous
medicine also cured Mr. Long of a severe
attack of Pneumonia. Such cures are
positive proof of the matchless merit of
this grand remedy for curing all throat,
chost and lung troubles. Only 50a and
$100. Every bottle guaranteed. Trial
bottles free at E. J. Eldrldge, drugstore.
ACCIDENT MAY PROVE SERIOUS.

The condition of Miss Nellie Shock-

part of her family and friends. Miss
President Morgan writes that his j Shockley, it will be remombered,

Yesterday, as expected, was
"banner day” of the cotton season
Americus, when receipts )at the six
warehouses here aggregated 830 bales,
thus beating the next best day by
bales. It came from the four points of
the compass, but it reach ed Americus
just'the same.
The previous “best day" was Sep
tember Stb., when receipts reached
812 bales.
More than half of this cotton came
by rail from nearby points, some of
having been shipped two or three days
ago, arriving here yesterday along
with a goodly lot by wagon.
With fair weather throughout the
week farmers picked with a vengeance,
and it was expected that receipts here
would pile up yesterday. From this
date it is believed that receipts will
begin to show a decrease, as the great
bulk of the crop has already been
marketed.
This is indeed true, as evidenced by
the well picked fields.
Farmers whose opinion can be relied
upon say that two-thirds to three-
fourths of the crop here has been goth
ered. Some fields have beon finished
entirely and pastured.
And as fast as ginned and paoked
the bales were brought in and sold,
The high prices of a week ago induced
many to sell, and even so long as they
could get 10 cents for cotton many
farmers were disposed to let go at that
prioe. Bnt few had any large amount
With cotton below ten cents a halt
will surely bo culled. For somo far
mors think the price will go higher.
And being in a better condition to
hold cotton than at any time since the
Civil War, farmers who have held on
to any part of their crop may hold for
a long suite.
They have, with the cotton already
sole., discharged the greater part of
their indebtedness, and what remains
of the crop is theirs in the full sense
of the'word. Many here yesterday
debated the question of selling
holding, with the result that the cot
ton is still theirs.
Some are willing to take 10 cents, but
few will sell for any less.
With the grent bulk of the crop
marketed prices are bound to advance
sooner or later. Private advices vob
tordny staged that the mills would
again buy cotton this week, which fact
will tend to aivanco prices.
from the faot that he had before heard
it rumored that these plants would not
agoin be operated. He gives the as
surance that, upon the other -hand,
both plants will be operated npon a
larger scale than ever before, and that
very shortly.
" We believe the local and nearby
trade aronnd both of these citieB is
amply sufficient to maintain a plant,
and it is onr purpose to give them both
first class, up-to-date establishments,”
writes President Morgan.
Tho Americas plant has a capacity of
ten thousand tons, as has tho Albany
plant, and afToids employment to a
large number of employes and labor
ers. It is one ot the largest mannfao-
turing establishments in this section,
and a resumption of operations there
will be bailed with pleasure.
As above statod, the plant will be
operated this season to lull capacity.
