DISASTROUS ATTACK
MADE ON THE FILIPINOS
Captain and 51 Men Are Cap.

Wa.-niVd iij.v, Sajit. 23.—The war dr-
partnii-iit Ills received the fallowing
cnbloer.iin Irani Cli iieral Mar Arthur,
dated Manila, Kept. VS:
“Krjit. li Captain Devereax Shields
nmlal men „f Company F, Twenty-
ninth regiment. United States volunteer
infantry, tint! one hospital corps man,
left Santa Cruz, Jlarinduipm, on the gun
boat Vallabos for Turrijos, intending t
return overland to Santa Cruz. I have
heard nothing since from Shields. Then
is scarcely nay doubt that tho entire
party was captured with many killed or
wounded, Shields among tho hitter.
Tile information was sent by letter from
the commanding officer ut Poag, dated
Sept. Vd and received Sopt. VI, consisted
of rumors through natives. The York-
towu and two gunboats, George S. An
derson (colonel of tim Thirty-eighth
volunteer infantry) and two companies
of the Thirty-eighth volunteer infantry
was sent to Marinduijuc immediately.
Anderson confirms the first report as to
tho capture, but was unable, Sc'pr. VT,
to give details of tite present where
abouts of Shields and his party or tho
unities of the killed and wouuded. This
information will probably be available
soon. Anderson lias orders to coiuinenco
operations immediately and move re
lentlessly until Shields and his party is
rescued.
“All troops are expected soon. Tho
Logan will bo sent to Martinique, if
necessary, to clear up the situation."
Jtecrultril nt Fort .McPherson.
Tho Twenty-ninth infantry was re
cruited at Fort McPherson, Ga.
Captain Shields was lieutenant colo
nel of the Second Mississippi during tho
Spanish war. He was made cnptuiu in
the Twenty-ninth infantry July 5, lsmi.
He was a resident of Natchez, Miss.,
whore his wife now resides.
Tlio scene of this latest reverse is a
email island, lying duo south of the
southern coast of Luzon, and about 300
miles from Manila. Marindnquo is
•bout 24 miles in diameter and was gar
risoned by two small detachments of
United States troops. One of these was
•t Po.ig, on the west const of the island,
and tho other was nt Santa Cruz, tho
port on tho north side. Captain Shields
appears to have started frotu Santa Cruz
on a gunboat for Torrijos, a small coast
port, and it is inferred that tho boat, ns
well as the body of troops under that
officer, lias been captured, for the dis
patch makes no reference to her return.
FRANKS HELD FOR PERJURY.
Former Member uf the North Carolina
Legislature Imlleted.
Raleioii, Sept. 28.—Tho grand jury
has returned a true bill against ex-Stato
Senator J. A. F'rauks of Swain county
for perjury. The caso is a seusutionul
ono. Franks is a Republican and was a
member of tho state election board. Two
years ago n man uamod Georgo W. Jus
tice came hero from Asheville ns a law
yer, stole a number of law books from
the courtliouso and other buildings, ami
was arrested ou tho charge of larceny.
Franks became his security, giviug’n
justified boud of $.V>, nud swearing ho
was worth that much in excess of all in
debtedness.
Justice fled the state and went to Ala
bama, forfeiting his bail. An execution
sent to Swain county for tlio amount of
P'rniik’s security was roturuod with tlio
statement that lie was worth nothing.
All efforts to induce tile authorities of
Alabama to arrest Justice have failed.
FEARS FOR THE^NEW YORK.
tiale Is (Slowing and the American
Liner Is Overdue.
Southampton, sApt. 27.—Tho Ameri
can lino steamer New York, Captain
Roberts, from Now York Sept. It), for
Southampton, passed tl.o Soilly islands
at 7 o'clock yesterday morning and
passed tho Lizard at 0:30 o’clock last
evening. She should have arrived here
about 4:30 o'clock this morning, hut has
uot yet been sighted.
Tho gale has been sw eeping over tho
British chunnel nud a tug lias been dis-
patehed in search of the New York.
As tlie day wore on the gale and mist
continued iu the channel. The South
ampton agents of tho American liner
are not anxious. They say that when
tho weather clears the New Y'ork will
doubtless report from tho Needles. They
also point out that tho Royal Mail
steamer Elbe, from Colon, which was
also at the Lizard at 2:30 o’clock, only
reached Plymouth at noon.
Excitement at Abbeville.
Abiieville. Ga., Sept. 29.—Great ex
citement existed here when it bccatno
known that the grand jury had returned
true bills against Z. \V. Lassiter, C. W.
Ford and A. J. Harp, managers of the
primary at this place, held recently.
The parties named in the true bills nio
some of the most prominent men here-,
both in business and church circles, and
their friends feel tiiat great injustice
has been done them. Mr. Lassiter is
also a member ot the (Cesent grand jury.
