the ministers of the Presbytery
mixed gatherings, and discussions bv

Thursday afternoon.
On Thursday night, Uth. inst, the
Presbyt y of Macon, which embraces
the forty Presbyterian churches
southwest Georgia, will meet in fall
session, tho opening sermon being
preached by Rev. Mr. Strickland,
Dublin.
Americas being tho geographical
centre of tho Presbytery, the attend
ance of ministers and ruling elders
promises to be large.
This meeting will last through tho
Sabbath. Tho Americus cbnrch will
be represented at this Presbytery by
ruling eider, J. W. Wheatley, with
ruling elder Geo. W. Bacot as alter
nate, and by the pastor. Rev. LeUoy

Yesterday.
A splondid aud much needed rain
foil throughout this section yosterday,
lasting several hoars. It was greatly
needed, being the first in nearly a
month, and will prove of vast benefit.
In somo sections of the county the
wells and small streams had begun to
fail and the water problem was already
serious one. While tho rain and ac
companying wind will damage open
cotton to a considerable extent it will
prove of great benefit otherwise.

of Georgia eonvened iu annual session
iu Americus yesterday with perhaps

of the session the Grand Lodge, at 4
o'clock yesterday afternoon, formally
dedicated tho handsome Masonio
building on north Leo street, erected
bv that body as an industrial school
for colored youth as well as permanent
home of the Grand Lodge,
A vast concourse witnessed the
pleasing de licatory exercises.
Mayor Ilixon, with members of the
City Council, were present, the Mayor
extending a welcome to the visitors
upon behalf of tho city of Americup.
Mavor H’xou's address was respond
ed to by Col. J. H. Deveau, collector
of the port of Bs.vannub aud ono of tho
most prominent and respected colored
men in the state. His romarks wero
pleasing and appropriate, the visitors
appreciating tho cordial welcome ex
tended them.
Rev. G. W. F. Phillips, npon behalf
of St. John’s Lodge of this city, wel
comed the Grand Lodge, Rev. Floyd
Snelson replying upon behalf of the
fraternity.
This concluded the exercises for the
afternoon, and this morning theGrand
Lodge will proceed to business m the
ball of its handsome homo. The ses
sion will last throngh three or four
days, and many features of interest
will be presented du-ing that t|rao.

SHOOTING IN GREENVILLE.
Two Men Are Wounded—One Will
Probably Die.
Greenville, S. O., Oct. 2.—A shooting
affray occurred here, which may result
in the death of one, and possibly two.
Tho shooting occurred at Monaghan cot
ton mills. All tho partios aro white
men. Goorgo Johnston, foroman of car
penters at the mill, had causo to repri
mand Ben Granger. Granger went to
Johnston and asked for a settlement of
his account, and notified Johnston that
ho intended to thrash him. Johnston
went to tho paymaster's offleo and noti
fied him to pay Granger off. When ho
came ont of tho office bo bad a knifa In
his hand, whittling a stick. Grangei
met him and told him to put up bis
knife, as he intended to whip him for
tho insult. Johnston held bis kulfo
aud Grangor drew his pistol and com-
menccd tiring ut him at closo range.
Two bullets hit Johnston on tho hornl.
A brother of Johnston, from Atlanta,
who had just arrived at the mill, seolni:
him shot down, drew his pistol and flrei
on Granger, hitting him five times, two
bullets outcring his breast, oue iu tho
nrm and two iu the head. It is sup
posed that Granger is fatally woundoi

of the executive board, held a private
conference today. Tbe questions under
discussion have not as yet been made
known, but it is believed they relate to
some measuros of relief for the miuers

Denounces Kingman’s Statement as
Fulio—Proposition to Cullom.
Portage, Wla, Oct. 8.—The special
train carrying Mr. Bryan and party ran
down hero from IaCroeso last night and
was sidetracked for half a day. Mr.
Bryan's attention was today called to a
statement by a Mr. Kingman that he
received $150,000 for Insisting upon tbe
silver plank of the Kansas City platform
and he said:
"It is hardly worth while to deny the
charge of a man who hides behind a
woman whoso name ho will not give,
bat in order that the most unscrupulous
Republican may have no reason tor re
peating tho charge I will say that it is
absolutely false in every particular. No
one over offered, promised or gave mo
that sum or any other sum for urging
that plank or any other plank in the
Kansas City platform or any other plat
form. I do not know anything of Mr.
Kinsman, but it is said that he is a
cousin of Senator Cullom, and I do know
something of Senator Cullom. Ha
should know whether his cousin is trust
worthy, and if the senator will state
over his own signature that he believes
what his coasin says, and is willing to
represent him in on investigation of tbe
charge, I will mnko him a proposition
which will give him nn opportunity to
produco his evidence.”
Convention Called to Order.
Indianapolis, Oct. 3.—Tho National
Association of Democratic clnbs, met
here this afternoon for a two days’
convention. Delogatos have not arrived

Up to noon less than 1,000 delegates hod
registered. W. Bourko Cochran was

in. The convention was called to order
at 2 o’clock and addressos of welcomo
wore delivered by Mayor Taggart and

followed by Mayors. T. Jones of Toledo,

camp, United Confederate veterans, at
meeting adopted strong resolutions fa
voring ronnions of "bine and gray" sol
diers of the civil war of both armies,
and by a unanimous vote declared their
confidence in General Gordon, tbe gen
eral commanding tho United Confed
erate veterans, and declaring thomsolves
at all times ready to support and Indorse
anything that he may do.

strikers of this section say they will pay
no attention to the notices posted at the
collieries granting on increase of wages

takes action. The Hillside Coal com
pany today posted notices of a 10 per
cent increase.

Matthews Found Guilty.
Savannah, Oct 8.—W. O. Matthews,
former manager hero for Murphy & Co.,
was convicted iu tho suporior court of
larceny after trust. Matthews is charged
with taking sometliing like $7,000, part

indictments ou which ho is still to bo
tried.
