THE 4MERICUS WEEKLY TIMES--RECORDER: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5, M 00.
MURDER MYSTERY IS UNSOLVED
No Light Is Thrown on Killing of
Charles Mitchell-
City Attorney James Taylor retnrneil
i yesterday from .Sruithville, where ho
| spent two days investigating the death
I of Charles Mitchell, a well known and
wealthy negro, whose dead body was
found boeide the railroad track several
nights ago at a point ono mile from
Smithyille.
Mitchell was not killed by a train;
that mnch is certain.
lint who committed the deed is a
vexed question still unsolved, despite
the efforts of the coroner and Attorney
Taylor, who have worked upon the caso
for two or three days.
Mitchell, who was about 1!) years of
age, had sold cotton that day and had
considerable money in his pocket.
At nine o’clock that night bis dead
body, with pockets rifled, was found
beside the railroad track. There was
but one wound upon the body, a deep
cat aboye the left car.
The position of the body, facing the
direction from whence the train came,
and other circumstances surrounding,
disproves thoroughly the theory of ac
cident.
A dozen negroes were arrested upon
suspicion, but upon none of them
could the crime bo fixed. The father
of the dead boy, Floyd Mitchell, is
sterling negro farmer, worth 310,000,
and would pay a handsomo sum, no
doubt, for information concerning tho
killing of his son.
Attorney Taylor is working upon
another clue which he may disclose
little later.

ADDRESSED A SMALL AUDIENCE
Few Populists and Democrats Heard
Candidate Traylor.
Hon. John H. Traylor, populist can
didate for Governor of Georgia, ad
dressed yesterday at the courthouso
the smallest assemblage ever brought
together in Sumter to listen to a polit
ical speech. Not moro than thirty
peoplo were gatbored in tho county
court room, and perhaps two-tnirds of
these were courthouse officials and
other democrats drawn thither by cu
riosity. Mr. Travlor is an aflable gen
tleman and pleasing speaker, and for
an hour disenssed the formation of his
party, the financial question and other
matters pertaining to the political
campaign. His tour was one of edu
cation, he said, and not an election
eering tour for the abuse of democrats.
Democrats, ho thought, were pretty
S ood folks, though wrong politically.
tr. Traylor was introduced by Mr.
John P. Glopton and received a most
respectful hearing, although it was
“love’s labor lost’’ to preach poDUltsm
in Sumter any more. Mr. Traylor left
in the afternoon for some point in
south Georgia.

coal was quoted 31 a ton cheaper today
than it was two days ago. This was
tnken as an indication tlint the railroads
and others with stocks of coal on hand
regard an early settlement of tho minors
strike as probable.
Advised to Stay Away.
Sciiaxtov, Pa., Sept. 29.—The miners'
strike ill the Lackawanna region closed
tho second week without nny noticeable
change in tho situation. The striko
officers at district headquarters have iu-
structed the meu, iu view of a possible
proposition from the operators, to re
main away from the mines and take no
action toward going back to work until
advised to do so through their local
unions, which will get tho word from
President Mitchell and tho general ex
ecutive board.
No Change In the Situation.
Pnn.ADEi.piua, Sept. 29. — For tho
first time sinco the beginning of the an-
throcite coal striko tho situation at tho
collieries owned by the Philadelphia and
Reading Coal aud Iron company was
unchanged today over that of the pre
ceding day. Tho official daily report
from Superintendent Luthur shows that
tho same collieries in operation yester
day wero all at work again today.
Twenty-seven collieries ore idle.
Speculating on the Result.
Shenandoah, Pa., Sopt. 29.—There is
much speculation here os to the prob
able result of the conference to be held
between General Gobin, Sheriff Toole,
strike leaders and operators’ representa
tives. General Gobin says that as this
district is completely tied up, and ns
there is uot tile slightest indication of
nny disturbances he can see no reason
why the troops should be rotuiued here.
