Geo. D. WHEATLEY,
Corner Lamar Street and Cotton Avenue,
No ono would have suspected that a
state and county election was in prog
ress in Americas yesterday unless they
had gone to the conrthonse, inquired
the way to the polls and peeped in
upon the little gronpe of managers and
clerks as they sat, almost idle,
throngh the day.
Such a dnll and spiritless eleotion
has never before been held in Snmter
county, as clearly evidenced by the
vote here and at the preeincts.
This was dae to the fact thst there
was practically no opposition to the
Democratic nominees, and as people
were generally very busy they failed
to go to the polls, as otherwise they
wonld have done. Then, too, tho
weather was bad, and this tended to
keep many people at home.
Less than 400 votes; probably less
than & O, were cast at all of the eight
precincts in Snmter county, out of a
total registered yote of more than
2, 1 i. It was indeed a light vote.
It was certainly a poor showing for
Democratic old Sumter county.
Shortly after the opening of the polls
it began raining and continued throngh
ont the day. At noon only a hundred
votes had been polled at the courthouse
and at 0 p, m., the number had not
reached two hundred. There was prao-
tically no “scratching" of tickets, and
it is said also that bat fivo populists
voted here.
The vote at the country precincts
was likewise very light, though the
returns were not seat to tho city last
night. When consolidated today Sum
ter’s vote will probably be three bun
dred and fifty or four hundred.
This year, besides the state ticket.
Sumter elects E. L. Bell, sheriff; J. H.
Allen, clerk of corrt; J, E. Sullivan,
treasurer; T. JJ. Allen, ordinary; J. B.
Dnnn, tax collector; J. P. Raiford, tax
receiver; J. H. Cheek, coroner; D. P
Holt, surveyor. All of these, with the
exception of Messrs. E. L. Bell, T, M.
Allen and J. H. Cheek held their re
spective offices heretofore.
The commissions of all the county
oflicors will date from Jan. 1st next.
Messrs. W.T. Lane andB. L. Joiner
for the legislature, and Hon. J. E.
Hays for the senate, received practi
cally the solid vote cast in Snmter, as
did Judge Z, A. Littlejohn and Solid
tor General F. A. Hooper. In fact,
thero was bnt very little if any scratch-
of tickets, and Bhonld have been none
at all.
The total vote cast at the conrthouso
or city precinct yesterday was 202
UPON ISSUES OF THE CAMPAIGN.
Both spsakers Made a Fine Irnpres
sion. Mr. Lewis Has Strong Hold
Upon People Who Are Proud of His
Record in Congress.
Hon. A. S. Clay and Hon. E. B.
Lewis have been in Houston county
this week in the interest of Democracy.
Court is in session there and a large
crowd is in attendance. At the noon
recess a'dav or two ago Hon. A. S.
C;ay, Georgia’s jnmor United States
senator, addressed the citizens of the
county at the courthouse on the pend
ing issues in the present campaign.
The day was very werm, bnt he spoke
in snch an attractive and entertaining
style tnat the crowd were attentive lis
teners and the speech greatly enjoyed, -
Senator Clay made many friends there.
Ho was followed by Hon. E. B. Lewis,
onr congressman from this distriot,
and, as with all of his ntterances, his
speech was well received. Mr. Lewis
has a strong hold upon the people,
and his ndmirors are proad of his rep
resentation in congress.

SCOTT’S EMULSION
of cod-liver oil is the means of
life and enjoyment of life to
thousands: men women and
children.
When appetite fails, it re
stores it. When food is a
burden, it lifts the burden.
When you lose ilesh, it
brings the plumpness of health.
When work is hard and
duty is heavy, it makes life
bright.
It is the thin edge of the
wedge; the thick end is food.
But what is the use of food,
when you hate it, and can’t di
gest it?
Scott's emulsion of cod-
liver oil is the food that makes
you forget your stomach.
Wc’H send you a Tittle to try, if you like.

Cold Steel or Death.
"There is bnt one small chance to
save you life and that is through an
operation,” was the awfnl prospect set
before Mrs. I. B. Hunt, of Lime Ridge,
Wis., by her doctor after vainly trying
to cure her of a frightful case of stom

didn’t count on the marvelous powou

FIELDS READY FOR PASTURING
Farmer Picks Last Bale and Winds
up His Crop.
Thero is one small farm a few miles
west of Americas that is ready for pas
taring cattle. Toe owner came to
town yesterday with his last bale of
cotton, and said that he was entirely
throngh picking. He made a fairly
good crop, bnt within tho last week he
wound up with the ileecy and is now
ready to enjoy tho fruits of his labor.
Other farmers in Snmter have pretty
well finished picking, though there aro
others who may not get throngh
before the end of tho month.
Conditions vary, thongh it is a tact
that all farm work will be completed
mach earlier this season than last year
FARMERS IN GOOD CONDITION
Commissioner Stevens Says Crop Is
Nearly Gathered.
Commissioaerjof Agriculture Stevens
has returned to Atlanta from his old
home, Dawson, where he went last
Thnrspay on bnsinees. Ho says the
farmers of Southwest Georgia will
make folly an SO per cent cotton crop,
which at 10 cents, has given them
plenty of money and left them in bet
ter shape than they have been in fonr
years. He says, however, that there
is comparatively little .cotton in the
fields of Sonthwest Georgia, thongh
there is a considerable amonnt still to
gather in Middle Georgia.

Serges and Cheviots are here in a wonderfully large

Homespuns come in for their share of popular favor
for they have proven that for style and service, they are not
to be forgotten.
The generally popular, and what will undoubtedly
prove the “winner” as far as the style of the skirts go are
the tlared skirts, in either five or seven gore with the invert
