Paris, Oct. 12.—The closing competi
tion iu the exhibition balloon matches
will live long 'in the history of aero
nautics. One at least with competitors
bus far outdistanced any previous offi-
eial recorded aerial voyage.
A telegram received at 1 o’clock this
morning from The Figaro’s correspond- |
ent iu Kiew, Russia, announces the ar
rival of the balloon Centaui e at a point
beyoud that city.
Comte Henry de La Vac lx is the rec
ord breaker. He was accompanied on
his journey by Comte Castillon de Saint
Victor, who held the previous balloon
record of 1,370 kilometers, from Paris to
Westerwick.
The Kiew voyage took 30 hours. The
Cen tan re appears to be a remarkably

lucky bulloou. It carried Comte Cns-
tillon do Saint Victor ou bis journey
and was also the balloon used by Comte
de LnVnnlx on bis recent trip to Loo-
luwok, in Russian l’ulund.
The distance of 1,370 kilometers is
measured as the crow flies.
The distance between Paris and Kiew
is 2,100 kilometers (1,304 miles). The
Ceutauro bad a groat advantage over
the other five balloons iu the contest,
from the fact that it was partially filled
with hydrogen and could thus curry a
much greater quantity of ballast.
