As a cotton wagon drove up to Coun
cil it McGarrah’s warehouse yesterday
morning Captain Samuel McGarrab
made the statement that it was the last
of his entire crop, and that his farming
operations for the year were now over
with except the planting of rye, wheat
and oats.
The statement caused little surprise
among thoso who know the situation
here and understand that the crop in
this seotlon has been gathered.
In a farming experience of forty
years, Capt. McGarrab says he has
never before had his crop gathered by
the middle of October. Last year bo
picked cotton until Chiistmas.
Capt. McGarrab operates a large
plantation in this county, besides
public ginnery on bis farm. He states
that his neighbors as well as himself
have about finished picking, and that
the gins may close down for the season
in a short while. Little remains to bo
done now.
And this condition of affairs prevails
oyer the connty pretty generally.
The crop is about ont of the fields,
and the satisfactory prices paid np to a
week ago has induced farmers to mar
ket it all. Little is held on plants
tlons. Bnt this will be held.
■The recent squeeze in prices has
cansed the farmers to^withdraw their
cotton and little, if any at ali, is offered
at prevailing prices, Sales yesterday
amounted ;to fifty or sixty bales, the
greater portion of which was brought
in by negro tenants who wanted a lit'
tie money,
Capt, McGarrab, who finished with
his crop yesterday, says that last year
he was bney picking and ginning ap to
Christmas day.

Slump Has Subsided and Prices are

The little change in the condition of
tho cotton market yesterday was for
the hotter, in that it seemed that the
slump started a week ago was ended
and values upon a better basis. For
the first time in a waek Liverpool

in yesterday eight points up, and New

FARMERS TO MEET TOMORROW.
Important Session of Cotton Growers
Association.
Mr. Thomas B. Hooks, president of
the Farmers Protective Association of
Sumter county, calls an important
meeting of this organization at city
hall at 10 o'clock Friday morning. This
is the time when {armors must stand
together in order to get an adequate
price for their cotton, which they can
do by united and determined effort,
Let every member of tho Sumtor or
gsuizitiou attend the meeting tomor
row.

Loans 5 Per Cent.
Choice city loans made at 5 per cent,
interest. G. R. Ellis, Amerious, Ga.
The comfortable country dwelling of
Mr. John R. Gatewood, seven miles
south of Americas, was entirely do
stroyed by fire yesterday morning,
with all contents.
Four outbuildings near at hand wero
also destroyed.
The loss in buildings and contents
wsb complete, as nothing was saved.
The family barely escaped with their
lives.
It is said that the fire wos discover
ed shortly before daylight, having
originated in the kitchen.
At the time the family were aronsed
it was too late to stay the fiames or
even to remove any of the furniture.
Everything in the house and out
houses was burned.
The family barely managed to es
cape from the houso in time,
The outhouses contained provender,
farm utensils, eto., and all of this was
lost. Neighbors came to the rescue,
bat could render little aid,
Mr. Gatewood came to the city yes
terday morning to purchase clothing
for himself and family, all they had
having been lost.
He expressed the opinion that the
fire resulted from accident, and did
not believe bis homo was sot on fire.
He had somo little insurance, not
knowing jnet how much.
The old home destroyed yesterday
was among tho best known in Snmter
county.

CATCHES THE FESTIVE POSSUM
Americus
Grocer Has Cage Full of
"Varmints.”
Neither drought or any other agen
cy has injured the possum crop in
Snmter, and it i& now ripe unto the
harvest. Tho season here is folly on
and the "varmints” are being caught
by the wholesale. Young Sam Hoys
made a sortie upon their ranks yester
day morning, and brought iu eleven
young fellows whorewith to regale his
friends. A hunter from tho country
also brought in a basketful, whioh
filled up the empty chicken coop of
a Lamar street grocer. Verily, tho
possum season is at hand, and with
potatoes on the side makes a dish that
four kings and aco high could not
beat.
