Lorenzo Marqukz, Oct. 19. — Ex-
President Kruger has embarked on the
Dutch warship Gelderlaud.
The reason given l'<>r Mr. Kruger’s
embarkation is that he feared the Boers
here would nttack him. The feelings of
the refugees against Mr. Kruger for
fleeing from the country is very strong.
Ho left the governor’s house in a
hired carriage, accompanied by Dr. Hay-
man, the governor following in a pri
vate carriage. They drove to the cus- ^
tomhouse pier, where they embarked. It
28 reported that the Gelderlaud will sail
tomorrow.

Jagersfontein on tho night of Oct. Id

mond robberies over committed in this

Macdonald, a wealthy milliner, placed
her jewels in her jewel box and laid
them away in a closet in her room, lock
ing tho closet. She had occasion to use
her jowclry and when she went to get
thorn the box and its contents were
gone. Mr. Macdonald at one reported

hundred anil fifty-fourth year of tho
founding of tho university were held in
Alexander Hamilton hall before a very
largo audience.
President Patton made an introduc
tory address, in which he announced
that at the mectiug of the trustees yes-
torduy action was taken by the board to
elect some distinguished graduato to
further the movement of establishing a
graduate department.
He also announced that n new officer
would be elected to be known as the
university secretary.
Bishop Satterlce delivered an address
on the "Ethics of American Civiliza
tion,” in which ho denied that the gov
ernment of the United States had de
veloped imperialistic tendencies.
Band of Robbers Arrested,
Dallas, Oct. 20.—The police depart
ment last night and this morning arrest-
ed five men and ono woman charged
with being a band of burglars. They
sre accused with robberies approximat
ing $30,000 from Dallas merchant! la a
year’s time. More than $3,000 wofth of
silks and other goods were recovered
The woman is charged with running a
"fence" for Dallas and other cities.
