ADVANCE MUST BE GENERAL
Will Bo Xo Partial Rcaumptlon ol
Work In the Mines.
Hazeltox, Pa.. Oct. 20.—President
Mitchell of tho Uuitod Mine Workers
has practically admitted that if every
operator in tho region were to post no
tices similar to those that are now being
tacked up by somo of tho mine owners
this action would in itself probably not
end the strike. He was naked if nil the
companies were to post such notices
what his next step would be. At first
he hesitated and then replied:
“Under the conditions lnid down by
the .Scranton miners convention there
could bo no partial resumption of work.”
When it was suggested that his reply
did not answer the question ho said:
“Well, all that I will say is that if all
the companies post notices it would clear
up matters considerably. It would re
move somo of the obstacles that now
present themsolvos.”
This is the first public statement that
Mr. Mitchell has made bearing on a set
tlement of the contest since the opera
tors took their decided stand that the
powder reductions must be considered
in figuring out the advance in wages.
