Timber Is Still Wanting
When tnc average citizen asks anoth
er average citizen who is going to be
elected Mayor of Americus tho latter
carefully sizes np the interrogator and
cheerfully admits that he doeen’t
know. And the chances are that he
nnconscionslp telle tho tmtb.
It ia a question that is pnzzling the
three candidates and their friends not
a little bit just now.
The chances of enccess of the three
avowed candidates. Messrs. Clarke,
Watts and Felder, bare been canvassed
at length during the past two weeks
and with varying resnlts,
The probablo entry of Mr. .W. P,
Wallis into the race wonld change tho
aitnation some, and there iB a pros
pect of bis yielding to tho requests of
his friends to make the race. As yot
he will answer poeitively neither yea
nor nay whenever approached on the
subject.
Many of bis friends believe that he
"will soon nnnounco his candidacy.
This wonld make the raco a four cor
nered one, as all the candidates are in
to the finish despite rnmors to the ell-
-eotthat one of them mishtwithdrsw.
The aldermanio end of the campaign
is lagging terribly. As yot there are
no annonneements, though there are
three places to be filled. Messrs.
Gaerry, Watts and Oliver are the re
tiring members, and one or all of these
will probably oiler again for re-elec
tion.
Alderman Watts, however, is ont for
mayor and already in the race.
The executive committee will meet
shortly and fix the date of the primary,
and while the real campaign will bo
short it will be lively from start to fin
lab.
begun at Philadelphia yesterday.
He is the second of the three ac
cused negroes to bo tried, and by tins
morning his fate may bo sealed. Tho
other negroes are Henry Ivory and
Amos Sterling.
Ivory 's trial has just been finished.
He was found gnilty of murder in the
first degree and gete the nsnal death
sentence.
Perry was the secon J of the accused
negroes to be put on trial.
It is believed In some quarters in
Philadelphia, according to the papers
there, that all three of the defendants
are likewise gnilty of tho atrocious
murder.
If this be trne it may result in the
conviction of Perry.
Prof. White, the law instrnctor of
the Unlvereitv of Pennsylvania, was
murdered and robbed on tho streets in
Philadelphia May 19th.
Perry, Ivory and Sterling wero ar
rested. It is said that Ivory and Per
ry both made confessions accusing
Sterling of the crime.
However, they admitted sharing in
tho property stolen from tho body.
Charles Perry was a prominent ne
gro residing in Americas, where he
held a responsible position with the
Sontbern Express Co. prior to bis
flight hence.
He was implicated in a burglary
here, and was a fugitive when tho mur
der of Prof, White occurred in Phila
delphia.
Nfgro-Old Woman Probably Died
of Heart Disease
Tho body of a negro woman, partly
devoured by buzzards, was found on
Friday in tho wools a mile east of the
city. Tho body was that of Eliza Hol
den, an aged negress, who lived alone
in a little hut which sho owned out be
yond the city limits. The old woman
had probably been dead for a weok, as
no one bad seen her in that time
Some children, attracted by the buz
zards, reported the fact to a negro
man wbo went ont and discovered the
partly devonred body of the poor old
woman. The coroner was sent for and
held an inquest. It is qnite probable
that death resnlted from heart disease
or apoplexy.
