01)0—Hryuii’s Plurality In the City
Nf.w Yoke. Nov. 7.—Eloctloa returns
this morning indicate that tho Republi
cans have carried tho stato by abont
113,000 and that the Democrats carried
Greater New York by about 17,500.
This forms ouo of the surprises of tba
campaign for tbo Republican chairman
and candidate for governor, B. B. Odell,
had been confident of the stato by only
00,000 and tho Republicans generally
have been willing to concede that Bryan
would carry Greater Now York by at
least 50,000. The Democrats claimed
that Bryan would carry New York by
somo 80,000 to 00,000.
Richard Croker sent Bryan a telegram
Informing him that though the state had
gone heavily Republican Now York
connty, which in 1838 gave McKinley
23,000 plurality had been carried by the
Domocratio electors by 33,000, a gain of
50,000. Mr. Croker was also quoted as
saying:
"No power on earth—nothing but hU
death—can prevent Mr. Bryan from re
maining the natural loader of tho peo

nearly 8,030. Over 200 preclnots aro
still to be heard from.
Tho claim was mode at RopnbUcau

Kiuluy. The Republicans place bis plu
rality at from 28,000 to 32,000.
Both sides are claiming Nebaska, bnt
it is generally concedod to Bryan by a
greatly roduoed plurality.
Tbo electoral vote as made up at Re
publican headquarters shows that Mc
Kinley bos a total of 284 whilo Bryan is
given only 103, including Koutuckyand
Nebraska. This is an indication that
Kentucky is lost to McKinley, nlthongli
tbo Republicans claim it for McKinley
by 5,000.
Tho control of the hoaso goes with
tho presidency. Tho roster of now mem
bers of tho lowor branch of oongress
shows that the Republicans were more
successful than their highest estimates.
While the returns are not complete in
all the dlstriots, the indications are that
tho Republicans will havo 202 members,
whilo their opponents will havo bat 185.
Tbo official voto may mako a difference
in a few of the close districts, bnt it
now looks as if Speaker Henderson will
have a working majority of 47—cer
tainly not rnnch less than that.

McKinley's Flection Hailed With Dfr
light by Che British.
London, Nov. 7.—Tho* afternoon pa
pers voice tho sentiment of England al
tbo result of the olootion in tho United
States. The Evening News says.
"Anti.imperialism, the attempt to stil
up jealousy against England, the cham
pionship of tbe Boers and the pauderi>|
to tho Fenians all availed Bryan noth
ing. His defeat is even more a defeat
for Croker and Tammany, and that is
* m PP* 08f feature. It really look* at
though Americans are tired of the gang
of corrupt Irish-Americans who have de
graded American politics so long.”
The Star suys:
“Had Bryan kept to the issues of anti
imperialism. anti-trnste and social re-
foruis he might conceiveably ha vs
won. Soand money proved his undo
ing. He has been ’erncraod on th«
cross of gold,’ bnt it has been very mnob
of a voluntary crucifixion. Tbe most
remarkable feature is the defeat of
Bo*a Croker.”
The Times in a special edition says
’McKinley’s olootion is no ordinary
party triumph. It is a victory for com-
mon honesty, sound sense oud sober,
enlightened political judgment. ”
Alter reference to Bryan’s endeavor
to make imperialism the paramount
issne, Tho Times says: "Free silver
and its attendant heresies are the real
-matter npon which tho electors have
given judgment."
After commenting npon "Bryan’s ad
vocacy of nnsonnd principles and un
constitutional methods and bis appeal
to class hatred, which stirred the pas
sions of all tbe worst elements of th*
population,’’ The Times expresses the
opinion that had Bryan been elected
even all tho ohecks of tbo oonstitntioD
oonld not have restrained him from ex
periments fatal to social order and ma

"From that danger tbe coautry it
