THE kMERICUS WEEKLY TIMES-KEOOKDER: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1900.
FIRST CITY CLOCK
SOLD BY COUNCIL.
Ancient Belie Will Be Made to Do
Duty Again.
AM EXCELLENT OLD TIMEPIECE.
DEATH OF MRS. ANNIE H. HEYS
For Nearly Quarter Century It Kept
Vigil Over Americus—Was Hidden
During the War to Prevent Confis.
cation by Government.
The old town clock that for moro
than a quarter century kept vigil over
Americns and marked tbo fl’gbt of
time from its lofty perch in the old
courthouse tower, will, after a rest of
ten years, again resume business as be
fore, on tick.
It was sold yesterday to the town of
Blue Ridge, in north Georgia.
Every resident of Americas feels at
tached more or less to the old town
dock, and many will truly regret that
its honest old face will be seen here
no more.
When Sumter’s handsome new court
house was built a dozen years ago
another dock was purchased, and this
faithful old public servant was rele
gated to a back room in the city ball
where, dost oovered, it has been very
nearly forgotten.
Bat now it is to be placed on a hand
some bnilding in north Georgia.
A brief history of the old clock, for
so many years the pride of Americns,
might not be uninteresting, particular,
ly as it has had a rather checker
ed career.
It is “band made,” the honest work
of an old Dutch clockmaker in North
nmberland, Penn, and was bought in
1858 for the old Furlow Masonio Fe
male College. For some reason, how
ever, the dock was never placed upon
that building,
Dnring the Civil War the old bell
came near being converted into an in
atrnment of death for nse against
the yankees.
The Confederacy was sorely pressed
for metal for the manufacture of can
non, and every available bell, even
church bells, were taken and cast into
guns. Fearing for the safety of “our
new town clock” it was hidden until
the war ended.
For several years it was kept con
cealed in a building on Cotton A venae.
At the dose of the war it was placed
in the steeple of the old courthouse,
where it remained for more than twen
ty years, doirg double dnty
dock and fire alarm.
Every old volunteer ^fireman in
Americus has responded to its warning
of danger at the midnight hour,
column of interesting incidents con
neoted with this old clock might be
written if they could be thought of at
this moment.
But its work here is done and its
“strike” will spread to a new Hold .
An Estimable Woman Goes to Her
‘Great Reward.
The announcement Friday of tbo
death of SI's. Samuel Ij. Heys, while
not unexpected, was one of keenest
sorrow to her many warm friends here
and throughout the county, whero she
was widely known and greatly beloved
by all. The end came peacefully at 11
"o'clock the night previous, after an ill
ness of several months. The deceased
was 82 years of age, aud was formerly

PITY AND BEAUTY
The most beautiful thing,
in the world, is the baby,
all dimples and joy. The
most pitiful thing is that same
baby, thin and in pain.
The dimples and joy have
gone, and left hollows and fear,
It is fat that is gone; gone

Their Portraits Dotted the Lino of
March, While Democratic Danners
Were Conspicuous—Every Lino of
Business Represented In Parade.
New York, Nov. 3. — Much to the
disappointment of all interested in tho
parade held under tho auspices of tho
Busiuess Men’s Republican and Soand
Money association, today’s weather was
very unpleasant. Tho early morning
opened with a cold rain falling and the
streets woro iu bad condition for tho
marchers. Tho rain also caused a little
delay in starting.
Governor Roosevelt, tho reviewer of
the parade, arrived iu Now York at S
o'clock on an Eric railroad ferryboat.
Ho went immediately to tho Lawyers
club, whero ho breakfasted.
The streets along the lino of m.xrch
were beautifully decorated. Tho down
town section of Broadway was a blaze
of color from tho onormons number of
flags displayed. In sorno of tho sky
scrapers oach window displayed tho
stars and stripes, and in each block from
tho battery to Fourteenth street thore
was a largo flag bearing the name of
McKinley and Roosevelt.
At different points nlong tho lino of
march were wooden poles abont 25 or 30
feet in hoight, erected by the Demo
crats, on which there were such sen
tences us tho following:
The trusts can make you march, but
they cannot rnako you vote against
Bryan.”
This is a trust parado, aud not a Re
publican prrado.”
On some of those poles were portraits
of Bryan aud Stevenson. Each of these
poles was guarded by a policeman.
Formation of tho Line.
After breakfasting, Governor Rooso-
volt went to the Produce Exch'ango,
whore ho was givon a reception. He was
met there bv General McCook, the grand
marshal of tho parade, and his staff, and
at the close of tho reception the lino
started np Broadway only a few min

route was up Broadway to Waverly
place, to Fifth avenue, to Fortieth street.
The reviewing stand was at Madison
Square.
The formation of tho parade consisted
of singlo platoons of 16 files front, in
cluding right and loft guides, and each
platoon was commanded by a captain.
The first business organization in the
lino was the wholesale dry goods Re
publicans, which marched in 13 sections.
They were followed by representatives
of the clothiers, merchant tailors, retail
dry goods men, the haberdashers, milli
ners .hatters, florists, builders, tho paper
trade, the coal trado, lumbermen, the
furniture trade, the hide and leather
trado, the shoo trado, tho cotton and
coffeo exchanges, tho tobacco trade, tho
Bankers' anil Brokers’ Republican and
Sound Money club, and iu fact tho rep
resentatives of practically overy branch
of business in the city. Included in tho
marchers was a largo division from
Brooklyn.
Itoosevclt Leads Procession.
After about 15 minutes’ delay the head
of the line started, with- the candidate
for the vlco presidency in an open ba-
rouchs. As tho baroucho started off,
surrounded by on escort and led by
mounted polico, the governor stood np
to acknowledge tho appluuso of the
crowd.
Tho mon who filed past tho stand iu a
quickstep bared their heads despite the
dripping rain and tho governor in com
pliment did tho same.
The continuous cheering, mingled
with the music of tho bands, rnado a din
at tho reviewing stand that drowned all
other sounds. A fow of tho paraders
carried umbrellas and thoso were gen
erally lowered when tho governor’s box
was being passed. Tho comparatively
narrow opening in the Dewoy arch dia
led many of tho companies and
somo of tho linos woro thrown out of
alignment. Eacli paradcr wore in his
buttonholo a carnation, oat of compli
ment to President McKinley, whoso fa-
vorito flower it is. Some of tho saluta
tions that greeted the govomor amused
him immensely and ho invariably an
swered tho men iu lino with a hearty
responso.
