President Cleveland, today denied an
alleged interview with him that ap
peared yesterday in a New York pajicr,
in which he was made to say that plant
had been decided upon at a meeting in
New York for the reorganization of the
Democratic jwirty. Asked if he knew
whether such a meeting had been held
in New York, Mr. Dickinson said:
“I decline to mako any statement. I
am not engaged in promoting any move

If a meeting is called 1 presume I shall

MR. BRYAN ON THE RESULT
He Is Surprised at the Magnitude of
til. Republican Victory.
Lincoln, Neb. Nov. 9.—William J.
Bryan baa given ont the following state-
sent concerning the election:
“The remit waa a surprise to mo anil
the magnitude of the Republican vic
tory waa a eurpriso to our oppoueuta as
veil a* to those who voted our ticket.
It is impossible to analyze the returns
until they arc more eomplcto, bat speak
ing generally we seem to have gaiuod
in the large cities and to have lost in
the smaller cities and iu the country.
“The Republicans were able to secure
tickets or passes for all their voters who
were away from homo and this gave
them considerable advantage. Wo have
no way of knowing at this time how
much money was spent iu the purchase
of votes nnd in colinization.
“But while these would account for
somo of the Republican gains, they
eould not account for the widespread in
crease iu tho Republican vote. The
prosperity argument was probablv the
most potent one used by the Rep'nbli.
cans.
“They compared present conditions
nth the panic times of 1893 to 1896 and
this argument hail weight with those
who did not stop to consldor the reasons
ter tho change. The appeal, ‘stand by
the president while the war is on,’bad
> great deal of iufluonco among thoso
who did not realize that a war against
• doctrine of self government in the
Philippine, mast react upon ns iu this
country. We made an honest fight
upon an honest platform, and, having
done our duty os wo saw it, we have
nothing to rogrot.
“We were dofoated, but are not dis
couraged. The fight must go on. I am
sure that Republican policies will bo re
pudiated by the pcoplo when the ten
dency of these policies aro fully under
stood. Tho contest betwoen plutocracy
and nomocracy cannot oud until ouo or
the other is completely triumphant."
Concerning himself, Mr. Bryan said:
“I have come out of tho campnign
with perfect health and a clear con
science. I did my utmost to briug sue-
sees to tho principles for whioh I stood.
Ur. Stevenson did nil that ho conlil;
8enator Jones and tho members of tho
Democratic, Popnlist, Silver Republican
and anti-imperialist committees did all
they conld. Ur. Hearst nnd his associ
ates in tho club organization pat forth
their best efforts."

Decatur, Ala., Nov. 9.—In nn in

lowing statement relative to tho result
of the election:
“It waa ouly what l more than ex
pected; iu fact, almost knew. I did not
somo up to Do.utur to hear auy of the
returns Tuesday night. I do not like to
go to fun* nils, and I felt that the Dem
ocratic ;.;.rty's funeral was being held.
I felt it nnd knew that McKinley would
be overwhelmingly re-elected. I could
have told onr people so six mouths ago,
but what would have liecu the use.
When I received the telegram calling
me to tho Eighth district, I told my
lamily that I felt like I had received
orders to go to the rescue of a sinking
ship, but that I must obey tha call or
aiy party-, which had honored mo with
ten terms iu congress and must go
aboard the old ship and go dowu with
her. I told our patty leaders in 1898
that if one word was inserted in our
platform against the honor of oar conn-

Continuing in this strain, the general

“There are two things the American
peoplo reverence; first, is their God, and
second, is their flag. A word against
either will bring dowu their condemna

in this country and ore growing more so
with tho mosses, and any jiarty that o;>-
