Death of a Little Child.
The little daughter, aged three yoare,
of Ur. and Mrs. H. J. Webb, residing
at Sumter, died Sunday after a short
illness with dipthona. The bereaved
parentB have the sympathy of many
friends in the sad taking away of their
precious little one.
Mr. Walter H. Iirowu wna stricken
with paralysis about 3:30 o’clock Tues
day afternoon while Bitting in the
oflice of Turpin’s stables, and died
within an hour thereafter at his rcsi
dence, No. 515 Ilampton street.
The announcement of the sadden
and wellnigh tragie death of this big
hearted, jovial and popular young man
will bo a shook to his hundreds of
friends not only in Americas, where
he had long resided, but to many
thronghont this section, where he was
well known.
It is indeed hard to realize (bat Wal
ter Brown is dead.
Six months ago he had a severe at
tack of fever, from the effects of which
he never entirely recovered, though
quite recentlv he has been able to look
after his business interests.
Yesterday, while in apparently as
good health as usual, he was convers
ing with several friends at Turpin
stables when, without warning, he fell
from his chair, speechless and uncon
scions, Physicians were snmmoned
and ho was soon removed to his home.
Within an hour the end camo. The
grim destroyer had triumphed,
Mr, Brown was a native of Stewart
eonnty, bnt for twenty years had re
sided in Americas. Few men were
more generally esteemed.
He married Miss Hamil, the eldest
daughter of Mr. A. J. Hamil, who with
two children snrvivoB him. The de
ceased was about 44 years of age, and
during his long residence here made
friends of all with whom ho camo in
contaot. His death will be generally
deplored.

CONVINCED OF CROP SHORTAGE.
Cotton Men Inspect the Fields Near
the City.
Several well known cotton men, in-
oladmg two of the largest exporters of
Savannah, drove ont to several of the
farms near Americus on Sunday morn
ing in order to satisfy thomsolvea as to
the extent of the damage done bv the
recent freeze.
And all returnod thoroughly con
vinced as to the utter worthlessness of
the top crop here.
On one plantation, where a field of
350 acres was examined, and, by the
w»y, it was one of the finest fields in
the country, there will be no more cot
ton worth pioking.
The owner ofiered the party the en
tire yield now remaining in all the
fields if they would give him tha value
of just one bale, but after examining
the rotten bolls and knowing that it
wonld bo a bad bargain tho oiler was
quickly declined.
The Savannah men oarried cameras
and took snap shot pictures of the now
desolate fields to show to their friends
at homo.
King Cotton awoke yesterday from
t le lethargy of the past few dajs, and
with a bound went np a quarter cent.
The foreign cables were very favor
able, and oponing with a net gain of
seventeen points contract cotton climb
ed steadily up the scale until January
touched 0.44 at the close, the highest
point reaohed since the fearful slump
in Oetober.
The market evidenced the greatest
firmness all day, and many here be
lieve this to be bat the beginning of
another very steady climb towards the
ten cents notch.
There will be no more 9 eents cotton
this season, Very likely.
Buyers were actively in the market
yesterday, as on Saturday, and nnmer-
008 rales were made by Amerions ware
housemen above 0 eents, not a few
fsney bales bringing as much as O.tg
eents easily.
And if it does not go higher from
this date there are many here who will
give up their belts as good prophets.
Just what psrtioular agency osnsod
the unexpected spurt yesterday is not
known, unloss it was frost in Texas
However, receipts at the ports are fall
ing oil heavily, the mills are beginning
to boy, and everything now points to
higher pricos.
Many farmers here still hold a few
bales of cotton, some of them a consid
erable portion of their orop, and these
will reap the benefit of their patience
in waiting for the advsnoe which they
felt conditions warranted, and which
is at band.

A Mendicant Who is Willing to Try

“Hops springs eternal in the human
breast" and one never knows when he
gets enough of anything, whether ii be
good or otherwise.
This truism was forcibly illustrated
here yesterday.
A poor old fellow, bent with tbo
weight of three score and ten years,
was begging nickles on the streets,
“Why do yon go abont begging,
when the county would take eare of
you?”: asked an acquaintance. “Why
don’t yon go to the poor honso?”
“Mo go to the poor bonee?” the
mendicant asked with disdain. “Not

The Novoe Vremya finds the situa

“The English journals in the Japan
