75 houses have boeu destroyed by fire at
Biloxi, a well kuowu summer resort and
business center on the Mississippi sound,
8 miles from New Orleans.
The fire troke out shortly after mid
night and a heavy gale blow tho flames
from tho Louisville and Nushvillo de
pot to the bcuoh.
Tho small fire department was powor-
less to stay the progress of the flames
and houses had to bo torn down in vari
ous parts of the city to chock the spread

The inhabitants were panic stricken

the fire simply burned uutil it had noth*
ing further to feed on. It broke ont
shortly after midnight iu a saloon near
the Louisville and Nashville depot,
where a gang of negroes were playing
dice.
It destroyed the depot, then swept
through to tho bench, a distance of
soven squares. Fortunately no lives
were lost, but many of tho j>oorer peo
ple lost all their possessions.
The more important losses were os
follows: T. D. Dillons, dry goods, $40,-
000; Orleans hotel, $4,0)0; tho Catholic
church, convent and school, $15,000;
Lopez & Co., grocers, $80,000.

One 3111 Passed—Committees Report.
Nsir Measure* Introduced.
Atlanta, Nor. 9.—The legislators
passed a bill providing for the inoorpo-
eation of tbe little town of Oglethorpe
in Macon county.
Two of the boose committees submit
ted their reports today, tho committee
on appropriations and the oommittee
rales.
The report of the oommittee on rules
was a recommendation that tho rules
contained in the manual of 1893 and
1899 bo adopted with oertain amend
ments.
Mr. Gcorgo of Morgan introduced and
had accopted a resolution providing that
a committee of throe be sent to Indian
Springs to investigate tho damage fre
quently done the statVa property there
by the overflow of the spring and to
report if it is possible to prevent snob
damage in the future.
The house concurred in a senate reso
lution providing that a committee of
two, one from the senate and one from
the honse, visit the graves of Governor
Clark and his family, bnrled at St. An
drew’s Bay, Fla., and report apon the
oonditiou of tho sarno. Mr. Tatam has
been named by the senate as a member
of the committee. Speaker Little will
name tbe representative from the house
tomorrow.
A largo numbor of new bills were in
troduced, and nmong them a number of
measures of much importance. Ono of
fered by Mr. Henderson of Forsyth
seeks to repeal tho law which makes it
ecessary for immigration agents to pay
heavy lioonse for soliciting immigrants
Georgia. Ouo was by Mr. Wright
Floyd, providing for tho establish
ment of a reformatory iu every county
iu the state, and one by Mr. Perry of
Gwinuett, providing for tho creation of
a state board of assessors, whose duty
shall lie assessing railroad properties in
Georgia.
